Men of the Moth

Coronado Yacht Club ran 15 races in the South San Diego Bay for the Harken//McLube Moth PCC's this past Friday - Sunday. Charlie McKee had to really work hard to keep up with the lighter ‘blokes on the final day and held onto first place overall. The top five results after McKee were Bora Gulari holding off Dalton Bergen by 1 point to take second, Jonathan McKee 4th and Hans Henken 5th.

Everyone was very grateful for the Harken/McLube sponsorship that provided free entry and covered regatta expenses. George Yioulos from West Coast Sailing (and the North American Bladerider Dealer) was also on hand for fleet support.

Conditions: Friday was 11-14 West-Southwest wind, quite choppy, 10-20 degree oscillations, courses were Windward-Gate-Windward-Finish with each race taking less than 20 minutes on long courses. Also on Friday 3 "slalom" races were run that did not affect the series results. The slalom was a 4-bouy, reaching contest with the last buoy rounded to port and a one-tack upwind beat to the finish. Dalton Bergen won the final on a classic "South Bay shear" and foiled by as the first "non-foiling" conditions of the day happened just 1 minute from the finish line.

Saturday was 9-11 knots from southwest, 5 degree oscillations, very infrequent shifts(didn't move a buoy all day), flat water. Got 6 races in before we entered "displacement conditions". And Sunday was 6-9 knots, south-southwesterly. Great practice for these guys in marginal foiling conditions.
