Who The Hell Is Dicky Scruggs?

We know he's a very, very wealthy Southern attorney who has made millions suing Tobacco companies. We know he's got so much money that there are rumors he is considering buying the New Orleans Saints. Who dat? We know that is brother-in-law is Trent Lott. And we also hear that depite the following story, he is actually a good guy.

We also know that he like boats. He's had a couple of race boats (Farr 40), and he likes big power boats. In fact, his 80' Broward burned up a couple years back during the last AC.

We're pretty sure that we've seen him in the back of DC's AC boat as the 17th man at least once.

This is all fine and wonderful, but what we really think is that this guy is the main private money man behind DC's AC effort. Sure there are the crochtety old bastards from NYYC, and there are cooperate sponsors, but some of them are not as cash laden as you might think. For example, we hear his deal with Computer Associates, includes much in the way of hardware and software technology and perhaps less cash. Not to mention the accounting problems they might be having. (See "The First Crack", Rumors and Lies, 2/20/02).

Individual, wealthy benefactors have almost always been the financial backbone of most AC efforts, and we hear Dicky is that person for DC. How much he puts in DC's pockets is anybody's guess, and i doubt we'll ever find out. But why a guy with Dicky's credentials would align himself DC, let alone give him a bunch of dough, is again open to speculation. There is sometimes no accounting for taste. He is a lawyer, after all.............
