So Cal Burn
As most of you know, we're getting fried here in So Cal, with San Diego getting hit particularly hard. A tragic situation for a lot of people, and many areas are still burining. This pic puts the situation in perspective, at least from space.

Cayard Wins Star N.A.'s
What must be his first big Star win in quite a while, Paul Cayard won the '03 NA's in 'Frisco in pretty convincing style. Freddie Loof and Howie Shiebler rounded out the top three. See the complete results right here, or you can always go to Paul's I Love Me Page for the latest on all things Cayard and his Star. Good times.

Unpredictable
If you had said that young Samuel "Shark" Kahn was going to win the 2003 Melges 24 Worlds, you'd have been called an idiot. If you also said that he schooled Harry Melges in the last race pre-start when Melges came after him, you be an even bigger idiot
Welcome to the Idiot's Club. The young dude, all of 14, won the World's in convincing style, confounding the pundits and amazing the fleet. Might he be one of the first modern era sailors to, because of some talent and his father's resources, become a world-class sailor? The kid has sailed relentlessly for years, and even did his first Transpac when he was eleven years old. he'll be one to watch for sure.

| Star N.A.'s Meanwhile most of the Star Class Heavyweights are also duking it out in 'Frisco. Howier Shiebler, Paul Cayard and Mark Reynolds round out the top three after two races. Huge SA fan Terry Hutchinson is creeping up to the front of this group, currently in fourth. Results can be found here. 10/20/03 |

There were reports that the new Hobie 33 was having boatspeed problems. Perhaps this explains at least their upwind problems? Sheesh. Photo courtesy http://www.hobie33.com/
Smashing
Mari Cha IV, the monster 140' schooner put itself in the record books today when it sailed past Lizard Point, off England, at 11:32:20 BST to smash the West to East Transatlantic sailing record.
Mari Cha IV left Ambrose Lighthouse, New York, at 17:39:41 BST one week ago today and completed their 2,925 mile crossing in 6 days, 17 hours, 52 minutes and 39 seconds, beating the existing record by over two days. The previous record, held by Switzerland's Bernard Stamm aboard Armor-Lux, stood at 8 days, 20 hours, 55 minutes and 35 seconds and was set in February 2001.
Impressive to be sure, but not unexpected. Is there any reason why this thing won't obliterate every existing monohull record? At 140' of high tech, why wouldn't it? How long until this becomes boring?

Juan Bad Dude
Here's a couple shots from the Bedford Basin Yacht Club, one of several Halifax area clubs that got nailed by Juan last Monday. Hey, we're into heavy air sailing here in Nova Scotia, but 110 mph is a bit over the top. Some of the local racers actually considered reefing and going to number twos.
Cheers!
