| Good Vibe It is said that a happy boat is a fast boat and I've largely believed it. We've all been on bummer boats where there are screaming a-holes, politics or some other reasons that simply make sailing no fun. Of course it doesn't always mean that those same a-holes don't win, but there is no reason to be a jackass in the process. Interesting how the new 70' Peligroso is a fast and happy boat with two wins right away can be compared to say the less than stellar Genuine Risk program which has been rife with discord from day one..... Billy Bob from Peligroso fills us in on their overall Ensenada race win. - Ed. From The Front
All this on a new boat on which this was literally the second time it left the slip to go sailing. "Peligroso" Spanish for Dangerous. I believe I am very fortunate to be part of a TEAM that believe. In the front of the race there was a competitive battle for the first to finish with Roy Disney's 86' Pyewacket taking first to finish by 24 minutes over second finisher Doug Baker on Magnitude 80. Mike Campbell and Dale Williams' Peligroso came in 2 minutes later. Genuine Risk, the boat that should have finished first but was fortunate to finish at all looking back on their track record, finished fourth a minute later. A gap of forty minutes passed then Scout Spirit crossed the line. After that it all gets a little blurry but no less important. A few sleds a few multis a few more sleds ya de ya. This
year's running of the worlds largest international yacht race
had 464 competitors that were treated to a challenging experience
that for most will not be equaled until next year's edition.
This year it was 125 miles of light swirling winds with intermittent
rain. The full moon was exceptional giving us lit decks all
night and the smell of Mexico with the offshore breeze. Congratulations
to all those that finished, felt they did well and had a good
time. Until next year Bien Viento. 4/29/05 |

News Flash Parlier Capsized Yves Parlier capsized yesterday when trying to beat the 24 hrs solo record aboard his twin rigged cat. He broke a rib a suffers from contusions, but is safe and sound, rescued by a Chilean cargo ship off the Canary Islands. He'll reach the Spanish coasts Thursday. Meanwhile, his team have boarded another boat to reach the wounded catamaran and recover her. Here's what Yves said : "the boat started to accelerate and to fly a hull, I had trouble easing the sheet, I went outside and managed to ease off, but the boat nevertheless finally laid on her side. I fell towards the opposite hull, and 15 minutes later, the boat was upside down". 4/26/05 |
"A Great Value" The above immortal words were issued by the equally great "Pedro" Isler when "reviewing" the six-figure Bravura 29 a few years ago. How prophetic he was, and now perhaps he can lend his endorsement to this little baby. Good times. 4/27/05 |
D'oh! Might his be the bonehead move of the month? The boat VAIO, an entrant in the Global Challenge have decided to retire from Leg 4 of the Global Challenge. At the finish of Leg 4 VAIO crossed the finish line and in the process drifted onto and hit the finish mark. They failed to mention this in their Leg Finish Declarations and it wasn't until the team reconvened after their break in Cape Town that they realized that, according to those pesky Racing Rules, this should have been declared. They then promptly informed the Race Committee that they believed they had breached the Rules, and dropped out. Dude..... 4/27/05 |

Pissed Aussies From IBI News The New South Wales Boat Owners Association and Boating Industry Association in Australia have both issued strong statements against a government draft that would change the leasing structure of marinas on Sydney Harbour. There are currently 37 boatyards and marinas on Sydney Harbour, which accommodate tens of thousands of local boats. According to a story in the Sydney Morning Herald, a draft proposal by the Carr Government could eventually shut down about half of them if certain provisions are introduced into law. The new proposals impact the leasehold of marinas on the harbour by not allowing the long-term leaseholders the first right to renegotiate a lease, and also prohibiting any goodwill of a marina's assets if it loses the lease. As in enchilada, as in Ensenada, as in first in class and first overall for the new 70' Tim Kernan designed Peligroso in the painfully slow Newport to Ensenada race. We looked up the name Peligroso and found that it meant "kicking ass while enjoying a real interior complete with generator, microwave and refrigeration." Probably doesn't hurt to have a few of SoCal's finest sailors onboard either, but clearly the new boat goes well - just ask the boys on Genuine Risk. The big buck 90' Dubois canter got beat boat for boat by Peligroso (as well as Pyewacket who was first in, and Magnitude 80). But hey, at least GR actually started and finished a race - a rarity for them. Photo from DA-WOODY.COM. 4/25/05 |
Thanks Mate... Sad as it was to read about the passing away of Charlie Segal in your 4/22 web page I do appreciate the report. We otherwise would not have known and although I did not know him personally, we did buy our '83 Catalina 30 from him. We shopped for a boat in Southern CA in '92. After looking at a total of 15 boats available elsewhere at that time, Charlie made an extreme effort to ensure that we would be happy with our purchase from Catalina Yacht Anchorage. All of this was done long distance to boot, since we did not make an offer until we were back in Canada. through the then, high-tech magic of fax machines and telephone, we made our offer from Vancouver, Canada, He arranged for surveys on hull and machinery, had an excellent dodger built for us, provided new spreaders and replacement of lower rigging from the factory (result of survey report), new motor mount bracket and then arranged the packing of the boat for truck shipment to northern Washington state. The boat arrived in excellent shape with more gear onboard than we expected to see and all of the paper work was in perfect order for importation into Canada. His service went well beyond what I have subsequently experienced with a more recent selling broker in Southern Ca and I've heard from other Catalina owners in the past that they too had had very good service in dealing with him. I'm sure he will be missed by many. Bob

Big in Beirut? Uh, no. Now here's a press release for ya: This year's 5th annual Beirut Boat Show has been canceled due to heightened tension in the region following the assassination of former Lebanese prime minister Rafik Hariri on February 14. The decision to postpone the five-day event (which was due to be held next month) was made by show organisers Messe Düsseldorf and its Lebanese partner in Beirut, International Fairs and Promotion (IFP), after close consultation with exhibitors and the show's sponsors, the Arab Marine Industries Association. 4/22/05 |

Death by Sailing So Cal sailor Charlie Seagal fell overboard and died while sailing on a Moore 24 in a Sunset Series race in Marina del Rey Wednesday night. It is unclear how he fell over, but in spite of rescue efforts by fellow crew members, he was in full cardiac arrest when lifeguards pulled him from the water. He was taken to Daniel Freeman Marina Hospital, where he died. He was a very experienced sailor and tthe top broker at Catalina Yacht Anchorage in Marina del Rey . It is tragic and there is a very real message for all of us: this could happen to anyone. We send our thoughts to Charlie's family and friends. 4/22/05 |
Gear Queer We just got the new short sleeve DryGuard shirts in and they are bitchin! The DryGuard is great for any sport in or around the water. Fluid literally bounces off and while the fabric may get water trapped between the threads for a short period of time when fully immersed, the DryGuard(TM) will be dry in a fraction of the time it takes a conventional rash guard to dry. The advantage of the DryGuard is that while it keeps you protected from the harmful UV rays of the sun it also insulates you from the chill of the wind unlike traditional lycra which is actually colder than wearing nothing at all. The material remains breathable which allows sweat to migrate through the fibers keeping you drier and more comfortable than ever before. We have them in white and an unbelievably cool looking black. They are available in L-XXL and are perfect for the warmer months. We also now have all sizes of long sleeve DryShirts (S-XXXL) in both gray and white, all of course with the unmistakable and much envied SA logo front and back (The DryGuard has the same logos). Plus, order any shirt now and you get a free SA sticker - a must have for all true anarchists. Word up. 4/19/05 |
That's A Wrap The World Speed Sailing Record Council the record-control department of the International Sailing Federation ratified the World record set by the VO 70 Movistar April 5, after sailing 530.19 nautical miles in 24 hours, at an average speed of 22.09 knots. | Con-grats A couple of good events here in SoCal this past week. The Congressional Cup continued flogging the tired Catalina 37's around in the LBC with Dean Barker beating his one-time mentor Russell Coutts for the win. Chris Dickson finished third. Here Kitties And Alamitos Bay YC held the 2005 U.S. Multihull Championship for the Hobie Alter Cup, sailed in Hobie Tigers. Greg Thomas and Jacques Bernier of San Diego won the event rather handily with a three way tie for second behind them. Photos of both events coutesy of new SA friend, Glennon of GTSphotos. 4/18/05 |
Virtually Why bother going sailing when it looks this real from your computer? Amazing. 4/18/05 |
Wouldn't you like to know! We will tell you that the project is under way, by a known designer and builder, with production capability. This thing could be big. More soon. 4/15/05 |
Ed in Frisco Well Oaktown actually. The Reverend Al Sharpton, 50 Cent and I are having a summit on rap lyrics. Right. Really though, I will be cruising around the Strictly Sail show Friday. Press a little flesh, check out the action, and then head out. Check me at the Rocket 22 booth around 2 pm. if so interested. 4/15/05 |

El R/P? Rumors are rampant in Valencia that the Spanish El Reto / Desafio Espanol have signed San Diego's Reichel-Pugh to replace Phil Kaiko as lead designer as they can no longer afford the time to wait for the Jury's final decision on Kaiko. Technical Director John Cutler was seen in San Diego last week, so it all adds up. Stay tuned for more on this breaking story. Now back to our regularly scheduled program... 4/11/05 |
Tomorrow We'll have an interesting story from top SoCal sailor and sailmaker Harry Pattison on the sails he built sails (in two weeks!) for the top Beneteau 40.7 at the SD Nood regatta. 4/11/05 |

Admiral's Cup Canceled The RORC has canceled the 2005 Admiral's Cup. Here is the official comment: The RORC's Admiral's Cup Management Committee considered that the uncertainty surrounding potential teams was such that the chances of staging a strong international event worthy of the Admiral's Cup were sufficiently in doubt and therefore reluctantly decided that they must cancel the 2005 event. Too bad as the new format looked interesting, and it certainly had the potential to have been a great event. Now the question remains: Is the AC done for good? 4/7/05 |
Happy Happy, Joy Joy
I spoke with Francis over the phone just an hour ago, and he told me he was amazed because a lot of people were curious, came and asked questions about his program. "I was surprised to discover that in fact a lot of people know the boat, I thought it did not interest anyone outside Europe. It's pretty nice, for my first time in NY". Francis delivered the trimaran from St Martin (French West Indies) to NY on his own. He started off with gentle winds, and soon was sailing upwind in 30 knots - which means a lot of banging around on this boat. There are now over 2000 requests to be on my 'interested' list for the F-22 and thus I think this design has the potential to become my most popularever. With Regards, Ian

They Work Our SA classifieds, that is. This from another happy SA'er: Please remove my Express 37 ad from your classified section. Sale has been finalized on "Bullet", ex "Blues Breaker". Seller saw my ad on Sailing Anarchy site. Express 37s are hard to find and S.A. classifieds made dreams come true. 4/6/05 |

Here's a nice little Santana 22 going for a nice little day sail under the Golden Gate Bridge in Frisco. Wanna see what happened with this nice little wave behind them? Check it. 4/4/05 |
| The Biz Sobstad Sues. Again. SA has learned that Sobstad/Genesis International has filed patent infringements against ALL sailmakers with string technology - notably North, UK, Quantum, Ullman, Doyle, Halsey, and every sailmaker using the D4 technology As evidenced by their suit against UK Sailmakers, with whom the had a licensing agreement, Sobstad knows no bounds for their litigious venom. In a press release, Sobstad's Peter Conrad said "All sailmakers making loadpath sails are in violation of a number of patents that we have worked very diligently to preserve. I'll say this, if you have threads in your sails, and it has three corners, you are going to be served." We tried to talk to Conrad, but all calls were forwarded to his bitch, Teddy, who wouldn't return ours. What a joke.. 4/1/05
No More Pros! We got this one first and it is a beauty - Apparently tired of writing checks to rock stars (among other costs), the Farr 40 class has, in a secret and surprising owner vote, decided to no longer allow paid sailors onboard at any of their sanctioned events. "The rising costs associated with racing a Farr 40, much of it in very high crew salaries, needs to be capped, and we need to do it now", the class said in an official statement. "It might be tough to police, but we essentially know who all the pros are, and we know they won't sail unless they are getting paid." Said one owner who requested anonymity, "This is a great thing. Do you know how fucked it is to watch a guy like Peter Isler do virtually nothing for $1,200 bucks a day?" We agree, that must be very fucked, but it will be fun to watch the "pros" scream like little girls over this one! 4/1/05
A 70 for 50? Well we scooped y'all on the Disney/Pirates of the Caribbean VOR sponsored entry, but are you ready for this - rappers 50 Cent and The Game have alleged to thrown their considerable bling behind another brand new VOR entry! The California-based team will have a one boat entry to be named G Ride and have 50 and Game logos throughout, with a decided "urban" look and feel to the boat. There is no official word on the program, nor whether the rappers would sail on the boat, but when told that Johnny Depp and Orlando Bloom had plans to race on the Black Pearl on the Atlant Disney sponsored VOR entry, Fity (as 50 cent is known) said " I'll show dem two pussies some real Black Pearls, motherfucker!" 4/1/05
More Suits Still bitter about his dismal showing at the Olympics, Paul Cayard has also joined the weenie brigade and filed a suit of his own. Citing that his "good name and reputation" were unfairly damaged as a result of a poor choice of the sailing venue at the Olympics, Cayard has filed suit against the IOC for unspecified damages. Never letting his overly huge ego not get in the way, Cayard is thought to be seeking millions in lost revenue. "Clearly I would and of course should be the head of virtually any top AC campaign, but because of the negligence and lack of due diligence on the part of the IOC, I have found that I am unable to gain AC employment and have no other choice but to sue" Cayard said. Oh boy. 4/1/05
The Biz Carbonwood? We received this from as part of a press release from Forespar. Shown below is a picture of a very rare California carbonwood sapling. Note the young one on the right has not yet fully developed its "grain" as the more mature one. This rare "wood" is found only in very remote areas of southern Orange County in California and is difficult to find, even by experts.
