"I'm 18 and I like It"
-Alice Cooper

Photos don't get much better than this one from NY Yankee worshiper Erik Simonson of h2oShots. This, yet another (yawn?) Pegasus Racing effort is Howie Hamlin, who continues his form from the 505's - he is just off the Kahn G5 jet from Germany. Kahn has 3 of the 10 18's racing in Frisco. Does anyone besides Kahn own boats these days?

Kilroy Was There

Yes, Jim Kilroy was there - 31 years ago in fact! That is how old this famous 80' Kialoa III is. Donated to Orange Coast College, here Kialoa still cuts an impressive form while sailing at Long Point Race Week. This nice shot is from GTSphotos.

Damn It

This very sad footage is of the Southern Yacht Club after hurricane Katrina devastated the New Orleans area. I have tried several friends and business associates from the area and at the moment all cell and land line service is unavailable in the Mississippi / Louisiana area. Best guess is that the Bay Waveland Club is also seeing hard times due to the storm surge they encountered. I know you have a large circulation amongst the sailing community and if ever there was a time for us to come together and help some of our own this is it. Not sure if you or one of your readers has the ability to set up a fund to help out but I do know that the local authorities have asked for donations to be made to the Red Cross. Heck the very least we all ought to do is donate blood to help these poor folks get back on their feet. .

SA Disaster Relief Fund!

Harry Pattison from E/P Sails had a good idea - how about we, as a community, get together a Sailing Anarchy Disaster Relief Fund? I think it should very likely go to the sailing clubs that need the help, but I am open to suggestions. Any help on getting this started or ideas? We are happy to be the vehicle to make this happen. Let's step up and do some good for those in need.

Navigate This

Posted last week under Got Lane, here is more on the Tjörn Runt.

Unfortunately this year, the wind was elsewhere. The 2004 Tjörn Runt had an execess of it though. Tjörn Runt is one of the most popular races in Scandinavia, the winner gets an enormous prestige. To win, most crews need to practice many times to get to know all the shortcuts among the rocks, and the mysteries about the tide and the sea-breeze. I am the chairman of Stenungsunds Segelsällskap, arranging Tjörn Runt. We'd love to get more European and international sailors to participate in the race over the years.

Love It!

This comes from Anarchist BJ Porter and gives a glimpse into the wonder of having the kids start to get involved in the game - Good stuff.

My boy is eight, and just started Junior sailing this year - learning in JY14's and Optis. He's heard me talking about racing, and had seen some from a long way off and seen pictures and videos, but I didn't think he was ready to come out for a race until recently. I was concerned he would get bored and fidgety, or get hurt by getting where he shouldn't. We've taken him and his sister sailing a lot, but cruising is of course, very, very different from racing - mom and dad are BUSY.

I told him he had three jobs - keep himself safe, stay clear of busy sailors, and keep the non racing chatter down during the race do dad could keep staring at the little strings. He earned a fourth job very quickly though.

He had such a blast, it was great to have him. He became the "backstay monkey" - he got a job pumping up the backstay with us as we approached the leeward marks, or needed tune upwind. Having a 55 lb kid in the back of the bus with me didn't hurt us a bit, and I don't think he realizes what a help it was for me not to have to screw with it when I was approaching marks.

I'm kind of bummed he'll be visiting his his grandparents next week and miss the last series race...although I think he is a lot more bummed than me. Having done it once, I'd bring him out every week.

We got the gun and the bullet for him too, and it was a gorgeous night with a full moon rising and a beautiful sunset. It doesn't get much better than that.

Match It!

Here's the Swedish Match Tour boys at St. Moritz, stage 3 of the 2005 -’06 Swedish Match Tour. Ed Baird won this round, sailed in Streamline 7.15's (23-feet) designed by Judel/Vrolijk. decent prize money, good venues and different boats would seem to make this a pretty good series for all.

Got Lane?

Calling this one right looks a bit brutal, eh? This shot from Rick Tomlinson, is from the Tjorn Runt, (around Tjorn Island) on the West Coast of Sweden. A very popular race with everything from Volvo 60's to Folkboats, as you can see by the photo..

Isn't it Interesting how deep most seem to be running given how light it is...Granted a lot of these boats look a bit dated, but still wouldn't one to heat up mightily, build speed and look for a place to go?

Still young George Szabo (and crew Eric Monroe) overcame a first race OCS to win the 2005 Star Class North American Championship, held in Marina Del Rey in Southern California. Unheralded, but known for how good he is, Rick Merriman (and crew Rick Peters) only beat Szabo on the water once, but sailed a very consistent regatta to finish a very very close second. Dago in the hizzy!

Team USA 1734 Update
Anderson-Mitterling & Hughes

A second update from Northern California. It's taken us a few days to settle into an internet connection, so thank you for your patience.

First, Dave is feeling better. Last week, as you may recall, he strained his abdomen and had to visit the hospital the day before starting the 470 Nationals in Santa Cruz. Thanks to the doctors and US Sailing Team staff, Dave has been rehabilitating the area with good success. He's not 100% yet, but is healing faster than expected. The challenge is now regaining strength in the stomach area.

Nonetheless, the 470 Nationals went well considering the injury. We rallied rallied on Day #2 with a 2-1-3, winning the day and putting us in 3rd within 2 points of the leaders -- 2004 Bronze Medalists from Japan. However, Day #3's results didn't prove enough to climb the rankings so we finished with the Bronze at Nationals behind two Japanese teams, but took the spot as the top Americans.

After a lay-day, we relocated to San Francisco for the 2005 470 North Americans hosted by Bay View Yacht Club near SBC Park (where the Giants play). The series offered some great opportunities to work on speed and sail against more foreign teams (as well as rest of the US Sailing Team). Many mistakes and decisions were compounded by a shifty, puffy venue. We opened the first two days with bullets, but averaged out with some poorer results. In the end, we felt we had wheels but found ourselves not on our A-game strategically. That said, we entered the final of four days leading a three-way tie for first (and a virtual five-way tie all within one point). The last day we rolled an 11-3 (the 11 became our drop). Good, but not enough for the win. We took the Silver behind the Argentinians and ahead of the Austrians. We were the top North American team, the next US team finishing 5th.

Today, we towed the boat to St. Francis YC near the Golden Gate (the location of the World Championships) and spent some time reviewing our new sails for the Worlds, which begins on the 22nd. We are resting up for what will surely be a long, windy, challenging -- and fun -- championship!

Thanks again for all your support!

More soon,
Mikee & Dave

Ripped
The new Riptide 50 (Designed by Paul Bieker) currently under construction at Ian Franklin's yard in Christchurch. At 50' and only 13,500 lbs. with 2,800 lbs. of water ballast, a retractable keel (draft: 12' down and 7'9" up). this one promises to be quite interesting. What is cool is that the owners first saw Jonathan Mckee's Bieker-designed "Dark Star" featured here at SA and became quite interested in getting a Bieker boat of their own. More to follow.

Its the Water. And the Ice. And the Land

Windjet is a project with the goal of setting three world speed records on land, ice and water. The records to beat are: land, 116.7 mph (USA) set in 1999; ice, 143 mph (USA) set in 1938; and water, Finian Maynard's 2005 record of 48.70.

The craft is built using advanced technology, and is supposedly capable of going five times the wind speed on land, and nine times on ice! Wow - check out the video!

D-licious

The awesome looking D35 multihulls have a pretty nice lineup. Alinghi, has a D35 (with Ernesto Bertarelli skippering with Pierre Yves Jorand) and a few really good sailors competing such as Russell Coutts, Loic Peyron, Alan Gautier and Philip Cardis to name a few - even Ellen McArthur did the big Bol d’ Or race this summer on ZEN (largest lake race in Europe). This past Saturday the Coutts' D35 placed 3rd over 7 boats and the Alinghi D35 came in 6th... not that anyone was keeping track!

175/505

Is this the largest fleet for a World Championship? 175 505's are registered for the CSC 2005 505 World Championship in Warnemunde, Germany! And yes, they will all be racing on the same course, at the same time.Team USA is 10 boats strong, and I think it's noteworthy that Howie Hamlin and Cam Lewis are sailing together again, with a combined age of about 100! On the other side of the spectrum, California high school sailing phenom, Parker Shim, has bought a boat and will also be competing.

Essence

Is this not what it is all about? A nice performing dinghy, brisk conditions, and the concentration of simply doing it, that makes this sport so spectacular? I believe the answer is yes. Not so Wild Thing

Hi guys,

Well, the race for Line Honours finished some time ago, with Maximus crossing the line in poll position. Skandia Wild Thing finished at about 21.15 UK time some 12 hours after their Kiwi rival. The guys had quite a time. During the previous night (when out of contact!) they parked up and were passed by the Volvo 70 Telefonica. They eventually got some breeze and once again overtook. When I spoke to Grant, Telefonica was in turn parked, and some of the Open 60's had passed them! So, all in all a very frustrating and strange light race, where anything could happen. The yacht will now sail to Sardinia, where she will compete in the Rolex Maxi Worlds.

Thanks!

Team USA 1734
Anderson-Mitterling & Hughes
Olympic 470 Campaign

Hello all,

Just an update... It's been a busy summer for the team. We took receipt of our new boat built in NZ. Thank you to Jack Franco and The Pro Design Group for helping us coordinate the arrival through Customs. We've also purchased new masts; however, the shipment arrived damaged so it's been a long few weeks trying to arrange for replacements. Finally, our replacements arrived last week in LA at the last possible moment. To recap, June found us in Europe. Dave sailed the 470 Europeans with Fellow US Sailing Team member Amanda Clark before teaming back up with Mikee (who was racing in college nationals) to win Kiel Week -- our first ISAF victory in the 470!! Mikee, it should be noted, also took College Sailor of the Year honors.

We're now in Santa Cruz for the US 470 Nationals. After Day #1 and three races we stand in 4th place, two points out of a two-way tie for second. We're certainly not on our "A" game since Dave is injured with a strain or tear to his abdomen. At first, the injury didn't seem to be much; however, by the time we arrived in Santa Cruz Dave had to check into the ER. US Sailing Team doctors have been working with him over the last few days, but it's clear that he's operating at 65% on the water -- making maneuvers quick difficult. Our plan is to take it easy and skip races if we have to.

Next is the North American and World Champs, both in the Bay Area.

Stay tuned!
Mikee & Dave

A vs. S

Interesting trim and angle differences between (l to r) Chernikeeff 2 (Farr 52), Aera (IRC 55') and Island Fling (Swan 601) at Skandia Cowes Week. In particular, note the differences between Chernikeeff with an asymmetrical kite vs. Aera with a symmetrical spinn. It would appear Chern is heating up in a lull, but still the differences are quite noticeable. Comments.

Southern California continues to produce a fair share of cool big boats (Peligroso, Pegasus, Genuine Risk) and now Jim Madden, owner of the J/45 'Stark Raving Mad', is having a 66' R/P 'Wild Oats' variation built by Westerly Marine. Gotta Serve Somebody

Y'all are so frigging chatty that SA has caused a number of server issues over time and now we have officially crashed one! From an engineer at NetHere, our ISP: "As a proud parent you can brag about the site killing another server." And here is a precursor from a previous server-related e-mail that we knew was bad news, "...they have already pushed 513GBs of traffic this month alone...."
So we ponied up and bought our own bigger server which will hopefully help such problems. Moving forward......

StressTest

As most of you know at the end of the Transpac there is a welcome committee, in actual fact Hawaii designates a host is for each boat. The host always does a wonderful job providing an instant party, a wide array of food, fresh leighs and drinks. I went to the website prior to the finish wondering who was Morning Glory's host and was very amused to see it was HOOTERS. I don't know how they jagged that host but attached is a photo of the Hooters girls testing the bowsprit of MG. Apparently the party rocked on and the Genuine Risk, which arrived hours later eventually decided to call the police, not liking MG's post race victory antics. Those wimps. When the sprit was engineered we did not take into account this load case, though it was strong enough to cross the finish line before it's final post race dock test. -R/P. Big Rigs

Turnover, Inc.

One of the biggest big boat disappointments has to be the 90' maxi Genuine Risk. Conceived as a step beyond the maxZ 86's, and executed as a top dollar, highly paid professional program, it has to be considered a failure at nearly every turn. Almost all sub-par results; an unhappy on- board harmony with numerous crew firings (and some simply quitting - a total of three original crew left on board for Transpac); a broken rig in the Great Lakes; and a beating going to Hawaii add up to not much bang for a whole lot of buck. Now with the Robbie Haines-led crew transformation from Pyewacket to GR, Haines is already letting GR people go, some he has never even sailed with. Given that Haines will have a lot to prove and will likely be expected to get results early, it would seem he would want to sail with all the crew to see who is best. But the Pye crew is a bit of a closed good 'ol boys club that may or may not have what it takes to get an apparent cranky boat and owner to the promised land, and it is unlikely that said owner will be quite as patient or as good a sport as Roy Disney was. Fun to watch though, eh? What do you think The Senator will be able to do that Keith Lorence and Dave Ullman could not?

8/4/05

Unhappy Together

Cow Bay is the fun, three- race windy regatta of the summer in the Pacific Northwest. Three years ago it was really windy and the Martin 243's cleaned up. None have been back since. Apparently some of the big boat owners and PHRF decided to a rating change would be in order for this year. A Martin 243 rates 69 Northwest, 60 SoCal, 45 SoCal offset and 15 downwind...So when the 243 showed up after the rating had been discussed, the local rater put it at -45 PHRF! So the boat went from 69 to -45, and after complaining about it all night they got bumped back to -12, Then in the morning, after another rater called bullshit they ended up sailing at +15 Some say the old rating was generous for the venue as it is a one gybe reach for 8 miles, and only tack four or five times up the beat, in flat water and 20 knots of breeze - legs and conditions which the 243 hauls ass. But an arbitrary 114 sec hit, then pushed 60 secs the other way. That is the biggest swing ever and the fastest 24 footer ever!.......PHRF apparently threw some numbers up in the air and just grabbed at something on the way down. Anyway, the Martin finished last, and nobody seemed to care. Here are e-mails between the Martin 243 and the organizers. Good times.

Bad PR

The Royal Ocean Racing Club [RORC], have denied an entry of the
75-foot trimaran B&Q skippered by Ellen MacArthur for the 2005 Fastnet Race starting this Sunday. The RORC has decided to enforce a 60-foot maximum length for multihull entries, despite the fact that monohulls up to 100 feet are competing. This seems a perplexing decision given that the boat may in fact be slower than the other multis. Wouldn't it make sense to have Ellen, the biggest names in the sport over there, compete in their biggest event?

SA Shows Well

Our Web Dawg ended up fourth overall at the Independence Cup in Chicago sailing in the 2.4 Meter class, just missing the podium by three points. This after finishing a superb second overall after the first 2 days to get into finals today.

The top three guys all sail the boat year round and in fact own their own boats. As stated in a previous report, this is Dave's second regatta in the boat. Betsy Alison, the coach for the US Disabled Sailing Team, is hot to get Dave sailing full time in the class, can you say "Paralympics". Well done Dave!

Independence Cup

Team SA

Our Web Dawg is doing quite well at the Independence Cup in Chicago in the 2.4 meter class. And this is only his second regatta in the 2.4mR class. The first race was a year ago in the same event. Here is is quick report:

I am doing pretty good. My finishes so far are 3-2-2-3-1-1 and am in the Gold Feet for the finals tomorrow. The fleet is tough and I am sore. So far I would say I am in second.

Go get 'em, mf'er!

Sobstad Uber Alles!

Not really, but here in the Hunter 707 Class at Skandia Cowes Week it looks like the fleet made a group purchase of Sobstad Sails. We may have some fairly interesting Sobstad info you shortly. Photo courtesy of oneEdition.

Extreme Video

Aren't we clever with our title? Seriously, this video of the maxi Maximus (scroll down and click on Indepth Transatlantic Coverage)
from the Rolex Transatlantic Challenge is pretty thorough with some good interviews and footage. A bit self-promotional, but what the hell, they do have a 100' maxi after all. Enjoy.

Total Optimists

A whole bunch of kids doing something that they'll remember and very likely have as a part of them for their entire lives. This from the 2005 Optimist Nationals. How cool is this sport?
Thanks to Jon Deutsch for the shot!
