Rider![]() ONYX is a project of some crazyEurpean guys, who designed a new daysailer for lake sailing just for fun and in addition to their full time jobs! This
what they told us about the boat: "The reason
for the boat is that we are all sick of sailing in
a (too) colourful mixture of ORC-rated sportsboats
and racer/cruisers in so called long distance races
and hardly any up and down races - which is boring
after a while. We want to fight each other in the evenings
and during weekends with a cool one design, simple
but fast daysailer. Easy to handle, to transport, store
and maintain. The boat is not for really for rough
conditions and waves, it is a smooth, light- to middle
wind runner for the conditions found in our
lakes for 90% of the time." |
King
Woody We've
always been a bit mystified by the doings of one Dennis
Conner. His bizarre forays into PHRF with a variety
of rule bending boats has seemed obsessive-compulsive
and just strange. Why a guy like him insists on beating
Joe Six Pack, and almost always with a better boat
and rating has always seemed silly. The latest has
DC buying the classic 80' Schooner Kelpie (which he
is racing in the Ensenada
race). he seems to be interested in the classics
of late and this is his latest. Pretty cool actually
and much better than him buying a Cal 34, longboarding
the hull, changing everything, putting carbon sails
and winning PHRF J.04/25/04 |

Gun To
A Knife Fight?![]() We'd have to answer in the affirmative as Alfa Romeo beat up on a bunch of teak (okay teak and carbon) palaces in the maxi class Hublot PalmaVela held in Spain. The very cool Tiketitan did mange to win a race, otherwise it was all AR, to exactly nobody's surprise. Now, for a copy of John Jourdane's new Sailing With Scoundrels and Kings Book, be the first one to spot what is strange about Alfa Romeo in this Nico Martinez shot. 04/24/06 |

Optis!![]() Want to know how kids become good ocean sailors? Here's one way: This is a recent practice by the Miami Yacht Club Youth Racing Team under the direction of Coach Leandro Spina. Leandro, by the way, is the current Snipe National Champion, as well as a team member of the Trimaran National Champions. The practice was held just outside of Government Cut in Miami Beach, in 25 knots of wind. Word. 04/21/06 |

Scratch Looks like a controversy involving the class president, protests, disputed rankings and disgruntled sailors is brewing in the US Tornado class. We have one side of the story, and we'll hopefully get the other side soon. Stay tuned... 4/21/06 |
| Less
is More Last week we correctly broke the story that Roy Disney came out of a very brief retirement and bought Philippe Kahn's nearly new TP 52. Looks like Kahn marches on, as not only did he recently buy a lightly used Farr 40, but also has two new Mumm 30's coming as well. Say what you will, but he is no doubt, a player. 04/18/06 |
An
Anarchistic Welcome Our
boys on movistar came a very solid second in leg five
of the VOR, and here they get a proper welcome from
anarchist Brian!Clearly the best of the (small) bunch after ABN One, they have hung very tough after all their setbacks. Look for Skipper Bouwe Bekking's final report of this leg soon here at SA. Also, SA will be going for a sail on movistar while in Baltimore - look for a full report on that! More movistar finish photos here. 04/18/06 |
Stacked![]() Who are those masked men? ABN AMRO ONE once again smokes the fleet, this time into Baltimore. More shots from Anarchist Bob. Nice work mate! 04/17/06 |
White Flight![]() Here is a very cool new 12 ft skiff design that was launched last week. The hull shape is a radical departure from the most popular Woof design. This new design (by James Francis) has a similar hull form to a Skiff Moth. The boat is constructed from SP Systems pre preg Carbon fiber with nomex cores. The hull weighs only 45 kgs,the skiff is 60 kgs fully rigged including foils and sails. It has a waterline length of 12 ft, an overall length with the pole fully extended of 24 ft. It is 600 mm wide at the waterline. It is 1.8 m wide at max beam. The Big rig is a 30 ft carbon mast, And the big kite is at least 45 sqm. Whaddaya think? 04/17/06 |
Con
Cup Can
you say a beat down? Gavin Brady won his last 13 straight
matches to win his third Congressional
Cup, sailed in Catalina 37 clunkers off Long Beach,
CA. This regatta clearly isn't what it once was (they
could use modern boats and better talent), but there
is no denying Brady's win here. Check out more photos
of the event from GTS

What's
Missing?![]() The new J/N S-40 here the first one launched in Japan. What's clearly missing in the cockpit? 04/13/06 |
| Bad Times We've always been a bit suspect of flares, and have wondered why more people didn't get hurt by them. Here is a story of a guy who was badly hurt using one, and not in some panicked moment on a sinking boat. Bummer. Btw, apparently the flare that malfunctioned was a Pains-Wessex White Handflare Mk7 04/13/06 |
Gray Ghost![]() Sailing, ghostlike, around by themselves, setting a few elapsed time records in the big tri Geronimo is a bit of a strange existence. Shot here in Frisco by anarchist Greg Nelsen, they left today for a stab at the nine year old San Francisco Yokohama record. Do you care?. 04/12/06 |

A-hole of the Week Everybody knows that you don't screw with a lawyer, but look how this one responded when a poor guy just asked him about the possibility of changing slips: The PC fleet is taking a look at who is where and I am wondering: Are you happy where you are or would you prefer to be on PC Row if that can be arranged? No promises here. I am just snooping around. Pls let me know. Rish Rish - S/Y Celeste, Pacific Class # 40, is quite happy at SDYC slip H-28, her permanently assigned berth since re-launch in 1999. The ownership of Celeste will zealously resist, including by litigation if necessary, any illicit efforts or attempts to divest Celeste of the tenured entitlement she has earned to such premises, whether via surreptitious effort or patent offense. That said, what exactly is being suggested? Respectfully, Doug

Pods Are Coming! We are going to start offering pod casts here at SA - both audio and video, in both original and shared content form. We are partnering up with two dynamic players, from both a technology and content perspective to give you a new way to access media here at SA. While some other lame ass site is wasting your time with a dull blog or yet another banal press release, we're moving ahead - stay tuned. 04/11/06 |

Good
Thinking From
a J/105 owner - enjoy. If you go to the J/105 site, check out the rules section and go to Technical Committee Rulings, there you will find that they just published a new ruling that bans bottom fairing. Of course, this is after at least half the national class already faired their bottoms. Even funnier is that when you bought a new J105 (as i did), they recommend you use Waterline Systems to.....fair your bottom. So it sounds like the factory is in violation of the class rules! Good times. Join the forum on this one. 04/10/06 |

Sailing On Bill Lapworth We are saddened by the news of the passing of designer Bill Lapworth. Famous for drawing the entire line of Cal sailboats, Bill drew a very nice boat, with the Cal 40, being perhaps the most successful of them all. One of the first "fin keel" production big boats, it was a breakthrough 40 years ago, and remains a great boat to this day. Your Ed grew up sailing on a variety of Cals, with a 29 being our family boat for years. Bill's great boats will always be a very happy part of my life, which I know can be said for many people. Sail on, Bill. There will be a memorial at Newport Harbor yacht Club this Friday at 3 PM. 04/07/06 |
