New Year

Might it be the year of the Tiger, as in Flying Tiger? This is a little drawing that Bob Perry did of the FT, and we have to say that so far we really like our boat. After a ton of prep, we are finally ready to race and will be doing so in the SDYC New Year's Day Race. We just don't know how fast it is and we'll certainly find out something! We'll file a race report next week.

Dominator
Wild Oats crushed the fleet on elapsed time going to Hobart. An impressive win by an impressive boat and perhaps an equally impressive program. We wonder how the Alfa Romeo/Shockwave folks are feeling right about now? Picture coutesy Rolex Sydney to Hobart Race.

Anarchy 2007

We are very much looking forward to next year here at SA. We've solidified our standing in the game, and have plans to be better in '07. We'll have our new AC forum up, we are going to have more articles from more good sailors in the sport, and we will continue to lead the way in community based involvement. We're also going to rekindle a bit of the Anarchistic spirit that we started this place with. We got a little soft, and it is time to get back a bit of our edge. Content will improve, 'tude won't.

We can't do what we do without all of you, so we'll be looking for even more articles from y'all - the kind of stuff that continues to separate us from everybody else. As always, we'll run this place as we see fit, but always open to ideas, suggestions and criticisms. We'll continue to step on toes and not care in the least. And we'll attempt as we always do, to make SA THE place to be in this sport. Tell us what you'd like to see more of - post up.

Rock on my brothers and sisters,

The Ed

Cool School

The Landing School's new 10-month Composite Program received accreditation from the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges of Technology (ACCSCT) making it the first of its kind in the Nation. This is a bitchin looking program that you should take a look at. Wonder where the skilled boat builders of tomorrow might come from? This looks like the place.

Shark Attack?

You might think so, but you'd be wrong. This is the new Radical 40, and click here to see what it actually is. Like another shot? And here's a really good downwind pic. Once again some fantastic work from Christophe Launay. Looks a bit tip with the wing in the air? Get the skinny in the forum.

A Little 'Tude With Yer Buzz, Sir?

had to buy a bottle just to see what it tastes like. 40% Syrah, 29% Zin, 31% Mourvedre, it should be tasty.

Produced by Four Vines Cellars of Paso Robles. It comes complete with a quote (without caps):

"a mind cannot be controlled. it cannot be restrained. it has no boundaries. it has its will. anarchy is the true nature of all things" -Alex Battig

Gone

The Ray White sponsored Koomooloo, shown here moments after their start, has tragically sunk in the rough going to Hobart. All aboard are reported to have been rescued. Thanks to Christophe Launay for this pretty, yet sadly, last shot of the yacht which, 38 years ago, was the overall winner of this very race. Comments on this classic old war-horse?

Go And Then Stop!

Breaking News: Both Maiximus and fleet leader ABN AMRO ONE have been dismasted, sailing in approx 30 true. There are some injured sailors aboard Maximus. Get the latest news here.

The boys are on their way to Hobart, and of course the big boys are out in front. Early leader so far is Wild Oats (pictured here by a very on the spot Andrea Francolini) Get the latest dope in our new Ocean Racing Forum.

Question of the Week

Next?

The New Year is just around the corner, and with it brings the promise of new opportunities, new ideas, new direction. Given your perspective on the sport, what do you think the best new development, technology, class, personality, or race will emerge from the New Year? You may add to this, or choose none of the above. The idea here is to foster a bit of forward thinking - one never knows where tomorrow's ideas might come from. Post up.

Happy Anarchy!

From us to you, here's hoping you get everything you asked Santa to bring you! We'll be back at it Tuesday.

Very Able

We're digging the looks of this new-ish side by side disabled sailor. We will have a report on it next week, but in the meantime check out their French site with a bunch of good pics.

Old/New Rag

www.bymnews.com/magazine/January2006.pdfAs you all should know by now, BYM News powers our “News” feature on the front page.  You may not know that 7 years ago, BYM started as an on-line magazine called Boats Yachts Marinas before they became a marine news service.

Marian Martin recently did some detailed research (SA forums, most likely) that showed that most people get their news online, months before it gets anywhere near the print rags.  At the same time, Marian believes that these same people want the capability to print something out in a format they can read when they have the time, which to me means while I’m on the crapper.  So today she relaunches The Magazine from BYM News.  It’s pretty good, so take a look. If you don’t like it, don’t whine to me.

Stumble Before the Fall

This is Diabetes, (the former Nicorette) in some very unflattering moments. Worse, they later dropped their rig! Thanks to Christophe Launay for the great shots.

Another great shot from Amory Ross at the Antigua Superyacht Cup. This is the regatta winner, Patient Falcon.

In Build

In Bloom
The first STP 65, Rosebud is off the plug. This Farr designed and Westerly Marine built boat is still on schedule to be sailing in early May. We hope to spend 7 to 8 weeks testing and sea trailing on the West Coast before participating in Transpac.

Many parts and pieces will have to be delivered from around the world in order to make this schedule a reality. The keel, bulb and mast are coming from New Zealand, the winches from Italy, the sailing hydraulics from Italy and England, the drive unit and propeller will come from Australia and the standing rigging and the rudder from the East Coast. Without a doubt, our world is shrinking as the global economy expands.

Thank you,

Malcolm Park
Project Manager

R/P S/T

Jim Pugh from Reichel/Pugh sent us the latest renderings of their new Storm Trysail 65. Here is a view much of the competition is likely to see. Oh yeah, those stripes say Morning Glory to us...

Survey Says...

Our friend Bruce Schwab has put together an online survey, in part to help with sponsorship opportunities for his future shorthanded ocean racing endeavors. Bruce is of course one of the most dedicated sailors in the US, and if you can take a few minutes to fill this on line survey out, that would be cool. Oh yeah, there will be a drawing of those who fill it out with the first place prize being a half model of Ocean Planet! Thanks.

Vitamin B

We'll bet upon first look, you knew right away that this was a Brenta. What you likely did not know was that this is the new B60, newly built at Knierim Yachts in Germany. This beauty will be presented at the Dusseldorf boat Show (as will the B30 and B38). We of course will have a report from the show from one of our European correspondents.

Question of the Week

Sail Making

When it comes to sails, everybody has an opinion, and usually a strong one. Based upon what you know, or at least think you know, and based upon the type of racing you primarily do, who do you think makes the best sails? When you give your answer, simply say what and where you race, and what sailmaker you think stands above the rest. Have fun.

12/19/06

Go Shoot Somewhere Else

As we reported a while back, the US Coast Guard had concocted a really asinine plan to establish 34 "safety" zones for live-fire training on the Great Lakes. Sure, nothing safer than live fire shooting zones, 34 no less, in an area like the Great Lakes. It is frankly hard to imagine an idea much more stupid than this one. Maybe a disastrous, preemptive attack on a sovereign nation based on outright lies might top it, but that is a whole 'nother story.

Thanks, however, to cooler heads with brains that actually function with some degree of rationality, that awful idea has been dismissed by the Coasties.

Separated at Birth?

More Cayard bashing, you ask? Naw! We just noted that these two talented, yet distinctly different guys, Cayard and Borat, look pretty similar. If Cayard starts claiming Kazakhstan as his home port, we'll know we were on to something. Be sure to check out Borat, or is it Cayard, modeling the latest in offshore gear. As Ali G might say, "Yo, for real."

Here is the humongous Maltese Falcon moving a lot of water at the Antigua Superyacht Cup in this great shot from Amory Ross. He's got a bunch more n his site so be sure to check them out.

A Mean Program

Peter de Ridder and team get a a feel for the VOR 70's as they take their Mean Machine (the former Pirates) out for an early romp. We hope to get an update from Peter, and here's a shout out to Sally Collison for some great shots.

3/11
Tuesday we ran a blurb on the new Farr 11s 35' canter and here are a few more details: Hulls # 1 and 2 are already sold, with #3 available for June/July 2007 delivery. The boats are priced @ $225,000, and built by Premier Composite Technologies in Dubai (run by Hannes Waimer formerly of DK Yachts). Looks like a bitchin' project for the right sailors.

Opportunity

Ocean Racing Forum

We have renamed the old Vendee/VOR forum Ocean Racing, as we think it could be a really good place for all long distance racing topics, both crewed and short handed. We have an excellent exclusive title sponsorship opportunity available for the company that wants to brand that forum. Get in touch with us if you are interested.

Rich Dudes
To the rest of us, the world of wealthy boat owners is a fascinating one. We heard that corporate criminal Dennis Kozlowski, the former chief executive officer of Tyco sold off his classic 1934 America's Cup boat Endeavor for $13.1 million by Diversicolor Ltd., a Cayman Islands corporation, according to papers filed in New York state Supreme Court. The sales contract also named Sempervirens Ltd., another company with a Cayman address.

The real owner is a man named Cassio Antunes, a resident of Hawaii, who has big plans for the boat, according to a statement released by his Miami lawyer and people working on the boat in Newport, Rhode Island. Read on.

Winter Wonderland

As in wonder where the wind went. Doing nothing to detract from the light-air reputation of Dago, Da Woody captures the magic of racing in San Diego Bay. That's the N/M 43 Vim slowly coming at ya.

Slay Ride

Nice to see something a bit more edgy. This is the new Farr 11s, now under build in Dubai. The owner is an anarchist, so we will no doubt get some early reports. Read more. Comment here.

Lost

Called Off

The search for Laura Gainey, daughter of former hockey player Bob Gainey, after she was washed overboard in the Atlantic Ocean during a storm while working on a ship bound for the Caribbean, was called off yesterday. She was not wearing a life jacket and is presumed drowned. We send our thoughts to her family and friends.

Mean Machine

Swedish skipper Isabelle Mungsgård (first female skipper to do the attempt) and crew on a SeaCart 30 trimaran “3” start the Midwinter Challenge to set a new record round Gotland in the 30 foot multihull class. The course which is open from 1 December to end of February reaches 311 M and starts and finishes in Sandhamn. The previous record is 35 h, 58 min and 10 sec, this time the crew hopes to finish close to 24 hours.

"We have been waiting for the wind to shift to west after weeks of south, now it looks very good. It´s going to be a real challenge in the dark to beat the old record" says Isabelle Mungsgård. This time of year the sun goes up around nine a clock and sets around three. The SeaCart 30 is a pretty radical trimaran, small, fast, offshore going and good for over 20 knots. Follow alonghere.

Send It!

On the way back from the Route du Rhum on a Class40'

Hi all, just to let you know the boat (LC40' Kenmore Homes) is safely back in Douarnenez in the lock there and out on a floating pontoon so nice and safe. We were going to come back to Gosport (from Azores) but 80 knots winds kind of changed that plan.

Attached pic of interest from the first cold front we had to go through off Finisterre, solid 45 knots and gusting a lot more for 38 hours with some of the biggest breaking waves I've seen!

You may also be interested that in these waves with just staysail and no main we managed to clock up a totally unbelievable 32.4 knots over the ground on the GPS, now that's what I call sending it!

Cheers, Nick

Big League

Most of you know of the huge yacht Mirabella, which has been a topic a number of times in our forums. There have been some criticisms of the boat (imagine that) and it is pretty cool to see that Joe Vittoria Jr., the son of Mirabella's owner has joined in on the latest discussion. Check it out.

Question of the Week

$64,000 Question

This is literally the $64,000 question - if you had $64k to spend on a boat, how would you spend it? It can be any combination of new, old, partnership, boat/tow vehicle, boat/campaign budget, whatever. Have fun.

Today's Question of the Week id brought to you by 1big think software - be sure to check out their marine programs.

Tiger By The Tail

This is one of the more interesting builder shots we've seen in quite some time. This is a Flying Tiger 10M being hung at the factory by its rudder cassette. Why, you ask? Because the first few FT's broke their cassettes under sail, and this is the factory's way of showing the new version of the cassette is strong enough. Perhaps not exactly how one does a strength test on a cassette, but we see the point. Here is a close up of the hanging. See what is being said in the FT forum.

Velux

First of Five
Bernard Stamm and Open 60 Cheminees Poujoulat proved, again, what we all know - he's the dominator in the world of singlehanding as he won the first leg with a lead of nearly 1,000 miles of second place Kojiro Shiraishi and Spirit Of Yukoh in the Velux Five Oceans. Of course his class has been decimated (Mike Golding officially retired from the race), but that only shows the guy's toughness. Amazing. Photo by anarchist Glug.
