Zano?

A story ran in the Dominion Post newspaper on Stewart Thwaites (owner of Zana) being prosecuted for $1.6m in tax charges. Simon Meikle, sailing manager for Konica Minolta and a business associate of Thwaites also face charges. Bad times. Does anyone know any more?

Double Ugly

There was a time when seemingly every designer had some wacky variation of a wing/bulb/dual keel configuration like this one. Do you know what boat this one is from? The first one to get it gets a nice New Orleans Yacht Club polo shirt (we are sponsoring one of their August series). Have fun!

2006 Shetland Round Britain & Ireland Race

Yanks On Top
We are pleasantly surprised to see the only American way out in front of the Shetland Round Britain & Ireland Race. It has been a long time since an American boat was at the top of this classic race and Alacrity, being sailed by Rex Conn and Etienne Giroire is doing it. The race is 2000+ miles, circumnavigating all the British Isles, broken up into 5 legs. Alacrity has prevailed through all the different conditions and is now on the final leg with a 15+ hour lead. Nice!

Nice for Nick

The fundraiser at Newport Harbor Yacht Club for sailor Nick Scandone was a success! This from one of the organizers:

With the help from SA we were able to raise $ 37,000 for Nick tonight. All the boys thank you very much. My take is that everyone from the age of 13 to 50 reads SA daily and more than 20 people last night told me they read about the event on SA.

Nice job people.

Lost in Translation
We we're looking at the Archipelago Raid site and came across this sponsor logo. Sure, there is a language thing when looking at foreign companies, but that doesn't make this any less funny to our 16 year old mentality.

Solo

A few kooks are on their way to Hawaii, all by themselves. A pretty impressive journey, and one that most of you just don't have the stones for. Slow going so far, and there is a pretty good log going from a few of the boats. Pictured is the open 60 Dogbark that should bark its way to Hawaii well ahead of the fleet.

Negative Vibrations

Seemingly, every few years some guy comes along with some wacky idea to sail or swim or row or float or wahtever around the world. Here is the latest to undertake this stupid idea.
He claims he has been met with nothing but "negative energy" from people about this. Gee, wonder why that is? It wouldn't be because it's insane, would it? What a dope.

"Pull Over!"

"Sir, do you have any idea how fast you were going? I'm afraid I'm going to have to write you up."How would you like to hear those words as you are carving your way through the Atlantic Ocean on your big ol' multihull, looking to break some speed record? Think we're trippin'? Think again.

Real Deal

Sure, the sexy story of the Bermuda race was Bella Mente stealing first to finish honors, but check out the Cal 40 Sein Fein owned by Peter Rebovich, Sr. out of Raritan, NJ. He and his sons have won their class and division in both the Newport and Marion versions of the Bermuda race an inordinate amount of times, and looks to correct out over the fleet again this year as the results stand right now. It could be argued that the real news is how many times this guy has won overall!

06/22/06

Rauchen!

Have you ever seen a Tripp 40 look so good? This is Amuse Bouche ripping it up at the "Nordseewoche" Race Week in the North Sea last week. So this got us thinking, do any of you have good stories about when you got an older (IOR, whatever) boat hauling ass like this?

Thanks to Anarchist Tim Schiederig for the great work!

Bermuda

Upset Accomplished!

Now that's a winner!

Bella Mente, the JV66 owned by Hap Fauth of Newport RI, did indeed pull off the highly unlikely: they were first to finish in the 264 boat Newport to Bermuda race. They finished, at 15:12:18 ET Tuesday. An amazing job, and can only leave the following question: how pissed is Maximus? Comments on this one?

One If By Air, Two If By Sea...
Last Friday, 266 boats departed New England heading out across the Atlantic. In Newport, 265 boats ranging in length from 32' to 80' feet, with crews of 2 to more than 10 departed on a 700 mile journey to Bermuda. 70 miles to the north in Boston, a 21 foot Mini, with a crew of one, departed on a 3,500 mile journey to Europe.

At 11:38 AM local time Friday ((Jun 16), Alex MeVay, on board his 2000 Pogo Genasum, left Cottage Park Yacht Club in Winthrop, MA, for a solo delivery to Europe, with his final port of call being Port Camarague on the Mediterranean coast of France. Alex hopes to make it in time for the Mini Med race in late July.

Alex is phoning me daily at 1200 GMT (conditions permitting) on his satellite phone with position reports, speed, miles covered, weather and any other tidbits of info, which I will be updating on a map that I have posted on the Minis in America website (no fancy satellite tracking for this passage!). There's a link at the top of my home page to the section I created on the website for Alex.

Another Race Around The World?

This one has a couple of twists, to be sailed in one design boats (52' monohulls), single-handed, and will (might this be a first?) have cost controls built in.A group called SailingOne will build the boats, market them, and run the event. Hoping to have the first race start in 2009, this one will be interesting to see how much traction it gets.

Upset in the Making

While last week we were making fun of this boat, Bella Mente, a Judel/Vrolijk 66, "sinking", it looks like the joke is the Bermuda Race fleet. With a couple of what will have to be called brilliant tactical moves, these guys find themselves leading the Bermuda fleet (including Maximus, who has royally tanked!) with a real shot at pulling off a major upset by being first to finish. The former west coast based Andrews 77 Alchemy and the R/P 66 Zaraffa are closing in however. Follow along...

VOR

Finally, A Win
Listening to some, you'd think The Pirates VOR race was sucessful. Funny, we don't see completing one leg of the race in the cargo hold of a jumbo jet, a near sinking, and a total beat down from the lead ABN boat as a success, but maybe that's just us. Cap'n Cayard did mange to win this leg to Sweden, coming from behind and putting a happy face on the rear end of a race that is best put to bed. Photo and the following finish story from Swedish Anarchist Anders Averdal:

Around 16 nm from the finish we still had ABN 2 in a small lead over Pirates. They were gybing their way down the Swedish west coast and trying to pick up some of the seabreeze that just didn´t want to show up at 12 as it usually does…But at one point ABN2 went a bit further out than Pirates and they probably lost this leg to Pirates due to the northerly current we mostly have here in Goteborg.

When the boats rounded the lighthouse Trubaduren, Pirates were in the lead by just a hundred meters. And thanks to the swell from the spectator boats, Seb and his boys never came closer.

Beginning Of The End

A Beer On The Upwind Leg

Looks like a good idea is about to happen in Chicago - the Weather Mark Tavern will open its doors this Monday June 19th 2006. Taking its name and décor concept from one of three points on a sailboat race course (duh), Weather Mark Tavern's atmosphere is "upscale fun for sailors and non-sailors alike." The menu by Chicago’s own Chef Craig Karas features delicious American Bistro cuisine with Southwestern accents not commonly found at the conventional tavern in Chicago. Here's what we know - a burger and a pint will cost you five bucks! Gotta love it.

06/15/06

Waaa!

We can't stand protests. Sure there are legitimate ones, but so many of them are just so much bullshit. Petty, questionable, political and most of it a big detraction from the game. Nothing better than spending two hours Sunday night waiting for some bogus protest to be heard, eh boys? Might the following from the Volvo Extreme 40 class be a good example?

An incredible day of sailing and protest hearings saw the overall VX40 series title swing back and forth between the all-British boat Basilica and the American entry Tommy Hilfiger several times, with the Americans finally emerging as the series winners. Three protest hearings and three races eventually saw Motorola-CHR win the Rotterdam regatta by a solitary point from Hilfiger in second and Basilica a further point behind in third. The conclusion of this final VX40 regatta means that Hilfiger wins the overall series by four points from Basilica in second.

Despite having finished eight points behind Hilfiger after yesterday's races, Basilica in fact began this afternoon's racing in Rotterdam four points ahead of the Americans, following a protest hearing in the morning between Motorola-CHR and Hilfiger which saw the Americans disqualified from Tuesday's final race. With Basilica two points behind Hilfiger on the overall series leader board, the Brits knew that they would take the series title if they won the Grand Prix in Rotterdam. In gusty conditions, Basilica seemed to have exactly that, registering a first, a third and a second place to finish on 118 points overall, four ahead of their American rivals, to clinch the Grand Prix victory and the overall title. More drama, however, was to follow as first Hilfiger protested a move by Basilica in the penultimate race, and then Basilica in turn protested Hilfiger in the same race for touching a mark. The results of the two hearings were to decide the fate of both the Grand Prix and overall series titles.

After over two hours of deliberating, by 9pm both protest hearings had been heard by the panel of three, who ruled in favour of Hilfiger's protest, disqualifying Basilica from the second race, while rejecting the British team's counter protest. Consequently Basilica lost its six points from race two, handing the Grand Prix victory to Motorola with Hilfiger in second, and giving the Americans the series title by four points.

Team Basilica skipper James Grant was understandably disappointed having come so close but was full of praise for the efforts of his crew:

"We are obviously bitterly disappointed with today's outcome. We out-sailed Hilfiger today and feel that we won this regatta on the water with some great racing. To have it subsequently taken away from us in two very marginal protest hearings is unbelievably hard to take, and is a clear indication that there is a clear need for on-water judging in this kind of close-quarter racing."

The Day

Hobie 33's have been around seemingly forever, winning downwind and offshore races with amazing frequency. Light, long and narrow, they are one of the best downwind boats of all time. So we thought this picture of a 33 en route to winning an Ensenada race would be interesting. The year had to be somewhere around 1990 or so, what with the Dacron mainsail and Polyester/Mylar tri radial genoa, right?

Wrong! That is Max Rosenberg's 33, Mad Max winning this year's Ensenada race overall with new low tech North Sails. Seems to have worked just fine! Picture from Geri Conser.

Blow It Up

Not the boat, the picture (although some likely wouldn't mind). It is huge and fun to look at the details, like the thread layout in the reacher, or the look of evil glee on the owner's face. Can ya blame him?

Throw Back

There was a time when the name Pinta was synonymous with a number of winning programs. With this, the latest in a long line of Pinta's, it would appear the time is here again as they are leading the TP 52 Class at the Sardinia Rolex Cup. Interesting deck/cabin layout with the house laid out to accommodate the jib tracks. BTW, the USA is a distant six (out of seven) in this international team event with each team comprised of three yachts: a Farr 40, a Swan 45, and TP52.

Little Red Sled
A couple months ago we showed you a little (5 meters) chined boat being built in Sweden. Ulf Tjernberg along with his girlfriend built it over the winter in his garage, and now here it is sailing. When we say little, we're not kidding:

Length. 16ft
Beam. 5.8ft
Displacement 500lbs
sail area 183 +270 sq ft

Looks good and look at that fat head main!

Out to Pasture
If this is the end, then what a sorry end it is. This is the almost mighty and very big 90' Genuine Risk, one of the biggest maxi flops of all time. Not that the boat didn't have great potential, it was simply never realized by a very poorly run program. Now here it sits at Bridgeview Marina in Sarnia, Ontario, with rumors swirling about its ultimate fate. We'd bet for about $1 million this white elephant can be all yours! Good times.
