Another Reason to Hate Power Boats

Okay maybe we can't blame all of this on power boats, but at least you'll agree it happened on a power boat. Might this be San Diego's entrant for the Darwin Awards?

Kitty Litter

The 2006 Swiftsure is a wrap. 214 sailboats started, and it was a real mix of conditions from light wind and 4 knots currents to 30 kts gusts and 6 foot wind chop.

I was having a cup of coffee when Cat Sass showed up at 25 kts - they spit kitty litter all over the west side of the race... big time pitch pole, caused all sorts of mayhem on the radio, all four crew members were safe and on the way to the marina inside of 10 min. An Aux Canadian Coast Guard "First Light Two" did sweet job of getting them off the boat.

Decaffeinated
What if they held a Lipton Cup and no one cared? That was seemingly the case here in San Diego as a once prominent regatta is showing signs of a serious fade.A pitifully small turnout of five yacht clubs (three from San Diego) showed up with J/105's to challenge for the Cup. SDYC with Bill Hradesty as skipper won a close regatta against a tough group, but still - this event should get at least 10 J/105's and if only five are going to show up then something needs to change.

Heaven Can Wait

Anarchist Shaun Lewicki has been through battles with cancer and he, like many others, understands the devastation of the disease and is doing something about it.

He is putting together a Heaven Can Wait 24 Hour regatta in Australia, with the intention of raising funds for the New South Wales Cancer Council. It sounds like a good event for a good cause and put together by some good people. Get involved if you can.

Shiny Happy People

Victory Challenge reveal their highly polished hull with mirror images they readily produce. Here the Swedes show a referee boat at the stern quarter just before rounding a mark. Next time you prepare for racing, stay up all night to apply that Turtle Wax carefully for the fastest hull possible. Yeah, right.

Thanks to Joe Page for the photo fun.

Community

Helping Hands

For those of you who don't know, we have established a memorial fund for the wife and young children of Hans Horrevoets, who sadly died while racing in the Volvo Ocean race. We have generated over $16,000 so far, but would like to ask our community to do more.

Please click on the Sailing Anarchy Hans Horrevoets Memorial Fund. Through Pay Pal, you may make a donation that we will collect and deliver to the family. You may donate as little as $20. Please be sure to click on the "Return to Merchant" link after donating so you can sign the "Condolences Book" which will be made available for public viewing here soon. Also, if you do not have access to Pay Pal, you may contact us about sending a check.

Let's all do what we can to help and thank you very much.

Fleet Weak

The first Louis Vuitton Act 11 fleet race sailed Saturday in Valencia and was surprisingly won by Victory Challenge. This sort of racing looks a hell of a lot more eventful that the match racing format. The AC (like the VOR) is going to require a substantial overhaul in our view, and perhaps a change to fleet racing would be a good start. Thanks to Gilles Martin-Raget for the nice aerial shot.

The Community

Reach Out
The death of ABN AMRO TWO crew member Hans Horrevoets has truly rocked our community, and rightly so. When the sea takes one of our own, we all feel it and all know that many of us are very lucky not to have suffered a similar fate.

The ultimate reality of this tragedy is very sadly now thrust upon his family, particularly his wife and two very young children (one unborn), who now must live the rest of their lives without their husband and father. A look at the photo brings it all home, does it not?

We think the very least we can do is to show not only some emotional support, but aslo financial support as well for them, and that is why we have started a Sailing Anarchy Hans Horrevoets Memorial Fund. Through Pay Pal, you may make a donation that we will collect and deliver to the family. Please be sure to click on the "Return to Merchant" link after donating so you can sign the "Condolences Book" which will be made available for public viewing here soon.

Let's all do what we can to help.

She Did It!

At 16:57 GMT (unofficial), after 6 months alone at sea, Dee Caffari became the first woman to circumnavigate single-handed, west about. She completed the voyage at the Lizard end of the Lizard to Ushant start finish line in gale force Westerly winds.

Challenge Business sailing manager, Cal Tomlinson comments, " I can't emphasize enough what a tremendous thing she has just achieved. It is a difficult route and it has been a particularly difficult year weather-wise in the Southern Ocean. The boat had only a 3 month turn around after finishing the 2004/5 Global Challenge and although has been adapted to be sailed short handed, is very much designed to be sailed by 18. There were a number of close calls over the last 6 months but she came through. Magnificent achievement!"

She will now sail up the English coast with members of her technical support team onboard to Ocean Village in Southampton, where she docks on Sunday midday.

VOR

Tragedy

Hans Horrevoets, 32, of The Netherlands, a crew member aboard ABN AMRO TWO, competing in the Volvo Ocean Race, died earlier this morning after failing to regain consciousness after being swept overboard from the boat.

ABN AMRO TWO was sailing in five metre seas and 30 knot winds about 1,300 miles from Land’s End, England when Horrevoets was washed overboard at 0211GMT. The crew of ABN AMRO TWO immediately turned the boat around, took the sails down and mounted a search and rescue effort. Horrevoets was located and lifted back on board.

However, despite the efforts of fellow crew members to resuscitate him, under the direction of medical advisors from Derriford Hospital in Plymouth, Horrevoets failed to regain consciousness.

Next of kin have been notified and more details will be released as soon as they become available. There is more info in our VOR forum.

A true nightmare and our sympathies to all concerned.

Tybee 500
SlowBe

A fairly stark contrast to the previous days, as the fleet was struggling in very light breezes, with seven boats in as of 3:30 AM EST!. These guys are a hardy bunch, but still it can't be much fun sailing all night in light air in these things.

Vidiot

MainStream

Sailing usually resides in its own weird orbit, convinced that it is all that, and wondering why the rest of the universe isn't paying attention. Sometimes it actually does, and here is a very commercial example of it, featuring a good young sailor named Ian Andrewes. Good for the kid and good for the sport, we reckon.

Tybee 500

Game On!

One of the top distance catamaran races is under way in Florida, The Tybee 500. The event consists of six days (May 14-19th) and 500 miles of open ocean catamaran sailing on 20 foot boats. “A Long Way to Go, A Short Time To Get There” is the motto of the race, one that rings true to the participants that may sail 6-8 hours per day, fully exposed to the elements. We have the video content right here at SA - enjoy!

Big Pimpin'

Batten Down

Make that Batten up as RBS battens have enjoyed being an advertiser here at SA and have signed up with us for another six months. RBS makes a very nice line of battens for all types of boats (Including the VOR boats!), and these guys have been doing it and doing it very well for a long time. Everybody needs good battens, and it seems like many boats never seem to have it together when it comes to battens. If that's you, get in touch with RBS!

"Committee Boat to Starboard?"

"Now you tell me that?!" An embarrassing moment for one of the finest sailing families anywhere, The Thompson's on the Ben 40.7 Super Gnat, as they realized too late that indeed, the committee boat is to be left to starboard while finishing. We almost feel bad putting this one up. Almost.
Thanks to Pat Reynolds for the timely shot.

"Uh....Early?

Brunel looking just a bit early as they line up for the VOR start in New York. Actually they got off the line just fine - the same could not be said for the ABN boats, but once again, ABN ONE find themselves out in front of the fleet. Thanks to Anarchist Scott Dinhofer for the shot.

"Uh....Starboard?"

The start of the seventh leg of the Volvo Ocean Race saw a fierce tacking duel in the shipping channel to New York. The Ericsson crew had a close encounter with the slightly bigger Maersk Djibouti! - Ruud Kattenberg.

"Uh...Strange?"

Strange as in radio controlled proa! According to the builders, It weights 6.5 kg, is built in carbon fiber/nomex and does around 10 knots in 4 m/s wind. Thanks to Magnus for the photo and info.

"Uh, Aground?"

We were motoring out to the race start in Chesapeake beside POC and all of the sudden they came to a dead stop from about 7 kts under power. My depth gauge read about 17’. Paul Cayard appeared to be in good spirits and the crew responded quickly and with the help of their support boat, canting keel way over to starboard and the boom kicked over they managed to drag her off. Word got out to Movistar and as she approached the area her keel was also canted to reduce draft. It really looked odd a boat healed over to 20+ degrees with no sails up.After all this the race start was fantastic with a huge turn out from the great sailing waters of the Chesapeake..

Cheers,

Their Kinda Town

Nearly cementing the beat down, ABN AMRO ONE takes the short leg to New York in the VOR. As movistar skipper Bouwe Bekking said below that in the breezy conditions, ABN "is gone over the horizon." Team Captain Cayard finally woke from their stupor to finish second. Thanks to Jon Nash for the pretty shot.

Whack It!

Of all the great things at the Sailing Anarchy J/24 Nationals, this might have been one of the best - a PHRF Piñata! This beauty appeared at the Anarchist's Ball, and needless to say it took the beating it deserved! Thanks to Reeve Dunne for the shot.

Old Yeller

Seems like forever since this R/P 68 "sled" was the state of the art in big boats here on the West Coast. How shapes have changed. But fast is fast and Taxi dancer has been updated over time, is well sailed and they put a hurt on some newer boats in Division 1 at the Yachting Cup here in Dago, winning four of five races. A bunch of nice shots are at GTS Photos, an SA advertiser and official photographer of the event.

On Board

Cat Walk
Your Ed got a chance to race on a Reynolds 33 cat at the Leukemia Cup here in SD last Friday, and the report is "Woo Hoo!" A rare experience for me is sailing on multi's, but I can see how once you go cat, you might never go back. Hitting 16 knots a couple of times in maybe 10 true is impressive, even more impressive is that you have no idea you are going that fast. Very smooth. The boats are of course fast and responsive, but not overwhelming to sail. In fact once us mono hacks got a few things figured out, the boats were fairly easy to sail and the thing that surprised was how comfortable the are. Loved the big trampoline, loved the tall cockpit coamings to keep you onboard, and loved the speed. I can see how the R33, and a few others like it are a whole new ball game. I'm ready for a few more innings!

Half a Mil??

Sure it's cool, and no doubt quick, and yes it's a signature Coutts, but $480,000 for a high strung daysailor?

Uh, we don't think so. But, very likely there is a buyer somewhere, maybe Dubai?

Most of those who use and play Virtual Skipper apparently think that it is a cool game, which of course it is. Here is a review from IGN.com, a gaming site that gives a non sailing perspective on the game. Pretty Interesting.

2006 Sailing Anarchy J/24 Nationals

With Pleasure

This is representative of about 15 e-mails we received after the regatta. It was a big deal for us and we're glad to see people were psyched. And hey, no one tried to hit me!

I attended the J/24 Nationals at Houston Yacht Club this past weekend, and all I can say is THANK YOU SAILING ANARCHY for sponsoring such a fantastic event! The tee shirts were great - you know the J/24 sailors pretty well (we DO drink more)! Also, thank you for the up-to-date event postings and the fun sailing forums.

Follow the Leader

With a view not much seen by ABN AMRO ONE, Movistar finally gets their long awaited win in the VOR, and breaks, at lest temporarily, the string of dominance by AAO. Did the good karma of having anarchists on board the movistar earlier in the week help? See the Boat Porn story below. Thanks very much to Amory Ross for the photo.

SA

SA and the J's

First, we are stoked to have been the title sponsor of the J/24 Nationals, as you have been reading here of late. The SA brand now truly does carry some weight, and clearly the 24 people were jazzed to have us be a part of their scene. We dug it too - we met a lot of new people, had a good time, and were proud to see all those SA logos - especially on the start line. 55 boats with big Anarchy logos on their bows - how cool was that?? It still kind of amazes us....

It is easy to see why this class remains successful - it is the people. You guys are enthusiastic, fun and committed to the game. Speaking of which, a lot of people need to be thanked, most notably 24 sailor Marc Holdaway and his girlfiend Bridgett. This was his idea and he is the one who really made the entire thing happen. And it was a great event.

A quick shout out to homeboy Chris Snow (North Sails Dago) and crew who dominated the event. An impressive win ( his sails looked really good, at least from off the boat, btw) and a super nice bunch of guys who were gracious with the ass kicking they administered. Well done to them.

We were proud to have been a part of it and this is something we'll not forget!
