TP 52 IRC

Here is the new Botin & Carkeek designed, TP 52 Samba Pa Ti hauling ass in IRC trim. Any visual clues to indicate IRC vs. TP 52 trim?

New Cat

This one just has a single hull however. It is the new Farr designed Leopard 3 for Mike Slade. Interesting that Farr got the new order from R/P (who designed the old Leopard), interesting how the boat has a very VOR'ish aft chine, and interesting how the boat, among an ambitious racing schedule, is also available for charter.

Question of the Week

Mr. Fixit?

The recent keel failure, capsize and abandonment of Alex Thomson's Open 60 is simply the latest in a long list of structural failures of these large, canting keel extreme shorthanded machines. The question, in two parts, is this: Are incidents like this simply what can happen when the envelope is pushed with boats like this; and if so is this acceptable? And if it is not, what should be done to prevent boats like this from ending up how they often do - upside down? Have at it.

This week's Question of the Week is brought to you by Composite Solutions Inc.

VELUX 5 Oceans

Not So Boss

Breaking News - Update 11/26/06: As if all the below wasn't bad enough, after Mike Golding rescured Alex Thomson, Golding's ECOVER proceeded to break its rig! They two solo sailors are sadly sailing along. Read up.

British solo skipper Alex Thomson is in trouble in the Southern Ocean, during leg one of the VELUX 5 Oceans. At approximately 03.30 GMT this morning, his yacht HUGO BOSS was sailing at 18 knots, in 30 knots of wind, when the keel suffered extreme structural failure and the boat capsized. The race office has alerted fourth placed competitor Kojiro Shiraishi (JPN) aboard Spirit of Yukoh, in case Thomson should require rescuing. Thomson is unhurt but has now abandonded ship. We now understand that Briton Mike Golding has immediately responded to the requests for assistance from his nearest rival in the Velux 5 Oceans race around the world, and has now turned ECOVER round to head upwind in order to help his compatriot and fellow competitor. Click here to listen to an interview with Mike this AM. A bad situation that hopefully can be rescued. Join the discussion in the forum.

Community

Fun Raiser

Of course you know that we like to get involved and get you involved in causes and efforts that we think are worthwhile. We have proven ourselves to be a community that gives, and that is indeed a beautiful thing. The No.1 ranked Star Class US Sailing Team and SA contributors Andy Horton and Brad Nichol are making an Olympic run that truly could be very successful, should be a fun thing to watch, and here is an opportunity to help out in whatever way you can.

They would like to extend an invitation to an upcoming event that will be held at the Coconut Grove Sailing Club (2990 S. Bay Shore Dr. Coconut Grove, FL) for the Horton/Nichol team. The event is a Fundraiser Cocktail Party to support team Horton-Nichol as they look to bring home a GOLD Medal in the 2008 Olympic Games (Bejing, China). The event will take place from 7 - 9pm on Thurs. Nov 30, 2006.

At this event, guests will have a chance to meet Andy Horton & Brad
Nichol, there will be a 50/50 raffle and a silent auction, along with
cocktails, hors d'oeuvres, special guests speakers and a presentation. Check it out and if you can attend, by all means do. Miami, represent!

Money Shot

Whaddaya reckon this R/P 66 canting keeler cost? 2 million? It has bought the owner the lead in the World Famous Hot Rum Series here in Dago. This is the same owner who had his lawyer send us a nasty letter complaining about some posts in our forum a few months back. The owner of course couldn't simply contact us, he called his dogs in, which tells us plenty about him. Perhaps the owner will read the OK Computer story below and go bark up some other tree next time.

This nice shot is courtesy of our friend Da Woody and be sure to click here to take a look at what happens in San Diego when the wind blows over ten knots - hahahaha!

Question of the Week

VOR OK?

The news for the VOR of late has been mixed - Ericsson coming back with Kostecki and Kouyoumdjian is good, but the announcement that ABN AMRO is not coming back is not so good. Given the problems with the boats during the last go around, and the arguably bigger problem of not enough entries, how would you propose to increase participation for the next VOR? Go for it.

Community

Lights Out?

The New Orleans sailing community is asking our peers around the country and world to give us a hand in fundraising to help restore our circa 1837 Lighthouse which was wailed on first by Hurricane Katrina and then Hurricane Rita. Through the efforts of the Lake Pontchartrain Basin Foundation we are trying to raise enough money to bring the historic structure back into operation and build a museum and a small docking facility. So far, we've done pretty well on our own, New Orleans Yacht Club alone held a party two weeks ago where the club members raised over $10,000 and the membership of Southern Yacht Club plans to do the same in the Spring.

If any Anarchists out there would care to join in, please visit www.saveourlake.org and make a donation. It would be even cooler if everyone did it under Sailing Anarchy's name and we could then get the Foundation to place a plaque on the restored Lighthouse acknowledging Sailing Anarchists everywhere. Thanks!

Media

OK Computer

The California Supreme Court said Internet publishers can't be held liable if they post defamatory comments written by others, a victory for online companies like Google Inc. and Time Warner Inc.'s America Online Inc,. not to mention little ol' Sailing Anarchy

The court, in a unanimous decision, said those claiming defamation can only sue the original source of the allegedly offending comments, not publishers or distributors, even if the distributor is an individual. Internet users are protected by the same 1996 Communications Decency Act that grants immunity against defamation claims to publishers in most circumstances, the court said, overturning a San Francisco appeals court.

``By declaring that no `user' may be treated as a publisher' of third party content, Congress has comprehensively immunized republication by individual Internet users,'' the court said today. Read on.

VOR

The K&K Show

Ericsson has stepped up as the first entrant for the 2008-09 Volvo Ocean race. Hard not to like their announced match up: John Kostecki will skipper, and Juan Kouyoumdjian will design the new boat to be built in Sweden next year. We know Kostecki's bona fides, but what will be fascinating to see is how Juan K tries to stay ahead of the design pack. Think he can?

The Clean Report

2006 Melges 24 US Nationals - Setup Day

I've seen a broken spreader today, as well as a dropped keel and a host of bruises and dings as around 40 boats got ready for the 2006 Nationals in Jacksonville, Florida. I've already done some serious damage to myself, having speared my palm with a shucking knife during the famous FYC oyster roast. This is going to be nothing compared to the carnage that will likely visit the fleet tomorrow, with shifty winds from 20-35 knots predicted. Hopefully the front will push through early

A pretty cool bunch of sailors are here, including past champs Argyle Campbell, Brian Porter, and Simon Strauss, as well as other characters like SA favorite and Cone of Silence co-owner JC Raby. i'm sailing with Simon on Team Gill and I'll be getting you updates after each day's racing, with some good photos to follow courtesy of my friend Katie.

Riders on the Storm

West Coast College Fall Champs hosted by UCSB at Santa Barbara Harbor. Day 1 started slow, but the hammer came down quick and the breeze was 30+ at times. The course quickly got moved behind a pier to provide some protection, but they let the kids have plenty of fun as they continued to run triangles with the gybe mark well out into the open ocean and full breeze (as you'll see). Day 2 was much lighter, but there was still good sailing to be had. The scores were tight and the winners were not decided until the final set. Stanford had a strong final set and beat out USC by 5 points. Thanks to Glennon Stratton from GTS Photos.

Here Comes the Sun
Talk about solar power! The transatlantic21 association’s solar catamaran will leave Basel this month en route for its transatlantic record attempt to New York. Seville. The journey will proceed via the Canary Islands and Cape Verde to the West Indies and then on to Florida. The boat will hopefully continue its journey along the US coast to New York, where "sun21" is due to arrive on 8 May 2007, having covered about 7000 sea miles.

Sun21 is a 14-meter-long catamaran powered exclusively by solar energy, and hopes to be the first motorized crossing of the Atlantic without using a drop of gasoline. If they attain the record, it should show the potential of the solar technique for ocean navigation.

SA Feature

Question of the Week

Ready or not, the America's Cup is fast approaching. Volumes will be written by all the usual sources, most of which will be predictably of little value. This particular AC seems to curiously void of any real spirit, appearing to be a very corporate, very business like and, despite some new blood, rather soulless. A new feature here at SA, this week's Question of the week is actually three.

Take a look at the AC as it exists and tell us three things that you would do to improve the event. Have fun.

Orange skipper Steve Ravussin activated his Sarsat distress signal and this morning, the Russian tanker "Okhta Bridge" picked up Ravussin.. The rescue was difficult, but Ravussin was said to be in good condition. Click here for Ravussin's story.

Launched

Welcome Mat
The latest from Mark Mills
The successful launch of the MAT 12 is the first in a series of new Mills Design yachts being produced in the region. The Enigma 34 One Design is a sporty high performance design under construction in Istanbul, while the tooling for the new Landmark 43 is nearing completion at Dubai based Premier Composite Technologies. This IRC 43’ Cruiser/Racer design already has 5 boats ordered for the growing Scandinavian market, where promoter Claus Landmark sees growing interest in IRC. Full details of this new design will announced shortly. Dubai and Turkey are some of the rapidly expanding economies where Mills Design has been developing relationships which can promote quality composite boatbuilding with lower labour rates, but also with relatively low shipping costs to Europe and the US.

Professionals '06 New Zealand blokart Open

Stiffer early morning winds ushered in a fiercely competitive second day of the Professionals 2006 New Zealand blokart® Open.

A weather system that baffled the event’s experts saw the forecasted light winds blown away by steady 10 – 12 knot winds, with gusts reaching up to 18 knots at times.

Racing got underway at 10:15 with the Heavyweight and Super Heavyweight divisions being run off first, to make up for those not run the previous day when dropping winds forced race officials to finish racing early.

But it was in the Middleweight division where controversy flared. The tight, fierce battle that waged between America’s Sean Fidler and Australia’s Ben Lazzar in one of the heats, showcased the wheel-to-wheel action that makes blokart® sailing an exciting spectator sport. Their battle ended in grief when the two locked karts and grinded to a halt in the chicane, leaving New Zealand’s Matt Beckett no where to go. The pilots avoided injury, but the resulting collision saw two karts needing serious attention in the pits.

Day Two ended with ten out of the sixteen races for the series completed, and the Kiwis dominating the top seeds in three out of the four divisions.

Day Three was a lay day – with fun deuce and team racing.

Orange Crush

At approximately 1000 hours this morning, Stève Ravussin’s trimaran Orange Project was in violent collision with a container, whilst sailing at more than 20 knots, under full main and gennaker.

The main initial impact was taken by the drop keel, which was fortunately in the up position, but the main rudder mechanism was completely destroyed and the trimaran, which is about 140 miles north west of the island of Florès, in the Azores, is no longer maneuverable.

Stève is, however, trying to reach the island, where his technical team will try to arrive with a new rudder. He has not yet had an opportunity to dive and inspect the state of the central hull, but cannot see any water ingress at the moment, so there is no question of abandoning the trimaran. Thanks to BYM News and be sure to check out all our latest news, RDR and otherwise.

Ego and the Id

So one hears that ol' DC has perhaps jumped once again into the PHRF pickle dish derby here in Dago, this time as the new owner of the ID 35 Tabasco. (It may be that he is simply "chartering" the boat for the Hot Rum Series here, as he is listed as the owner/skipper for the series. Some say the boat is heading to Frisco to join the growing 35 fleet up there). Conner of course has created a rather bizarre history of cherry picking in PHRF with a range of rule beaters (highly modified CF 27, Soverel 33) and rockets (R/P 50, SC 70) just to name a few. The 35's are quick and last time we checked, Conner knows how to get around the course, so no doubt the PHRF fleet here is getting ready to bend over and take it, once again.
