Little Dude, Big Dreams

What a shot. For everyone one of us who ever looked at that big bitchin maxi (magazines or in person), this shot says it all! Here's the story:
We chanced upon Wild Oats at Pier 35 on Melbourne’s Yarra River and my son, young Jack was just blown away by the size and power of the boat. I took this shot and reckon it sums up the thought processes going on in his mind. Jack, just turned 7, started sailing lessons at Sandringham last week in Optis and Pacers but I reckon he has bigger things in mind!

'Bout damn time yachting came to the 'hood. You got a problem with that? Talk to my homeboy.... Thanks to anarchist Inattentive Observer for the shot - join the fun!

Fly Boys

The very trippy hydrofoiler l’Hydroptère has been hitting some amazing speeds - how does 47.2 knots sound? We'll have a feature on the boat from Tim Zimmermann in this week's World of Wetass later this week.

Question of the Week

Enemy of Your State

Everybody has one guy - maybe more - who is the one that you just can't beat. Sure, every so often you get him, but he basically owns you. Everybody's got an arch enemy, right? So the question is, who is the guy, the boat, the program, and why are they so hard to beat?

Report

DoD'oh
Anarchist Photo Boy took some shots of this bird as it appeared in Frisco a couple weeks back, and wrote a report for us as well We were just too stupid to get it up on the front page in a timely manner, so it is posted in the forum. Read it here and of course comment as you wish.

The Horror...

Let's say some half-crocked billionaire decided to fund the SA AC Team. An insane notion, but nonetheless this might this be a good paint scheme for our first boat! Actually it is a Sailing Anarchy skin for the Virtual Skipper 4 game, thanks to anarchist Jean. If anybody wants one, e-mail us.

"Oh Crap"

Okay, you're on Quantum Racing at Geelong Race Week, and you find yourself good and stuck under a shall we say a slightly bigger and faster Skandia. There aren't many options, and it looks like Q is already doing the best one - foot off and separate to leeward. Do you then wait just long enough to tack ASAP? Any other options?

Reader Rant

London Boat Show No Go

There really wasn't squat to see on the sailing side beyond the same tired French and J-esq production boats, and precious little to see new/exciting on the powerboat side. Did meet Eddie Jourdan of F1 fame on a whacking big 37m Sunseeker, so that was kind of cool.

Whatever sailing energy that was evidenced at the Southamption Boat Show was completely missing here. To be fair, the show is at the wrong place and at the wrong time for the sailing crowd. I'd
suggest that the sailing market boycott London and expend their efforts further at Southampton 2007.

I'm not an advocate for either show beyond being an exhibitor at both targeted at powerboats, so I don't have a dog in this (sailing) fight.

I am however passionate for the development of sailing and hope that the marketing gurus see that it might be better to concentrate $$$ at shows where you can make an impact. Spreading too thin and in marginal shows is a waste of marketing dollars.

I wish the London Boat show well and based on reports of powerboat sales, they've exceeded expectations. From the sailing side, January on the Thames is just not the working for me. - Anarchist Dave.

Watertribe Everglades Challenge: College Style

When my friends Mike, Matt, Chris and I thought about what we should do over our upcoming spring break, our choice was not the usual college hotspots but a 300 mile distance race in the Crocodile and Manatee inhabited waters off Florida's west coast. Here is some info about our team and this awesome race.

The Everglades Challenge is an extreme 300 mile unsupported adventure race that starts in Fort Desoto Florida, takes competitors down the west coast through the Everglades and finishes in Key Largo. The race is managed by a group called the Watertribe which puts on a couple of different races in the US including one that circumnavigates Florida and previously one on Lake Michigan. Why don't more people do races like this?!? Read on.

The Dope Man
Nothing like a little creative boatbuilding in the UK, this though perhaps a bit much. Crompton Marine owner Ian Rush was accused of building boats for drug smugglers in North Africa and Spain, according to a story on the BBC News website. Rush, according to prosecutors, continued to build the high-speed inflatables even after his partners, Richard Davison and Ellen George, were both arrested in March 2004. Rush has pleaded not guilty to plotting to obtain criminal property in connection with drug smuggling. Read on. There is a topic in the forums should you wish to check it out.

Number One!

When was the last time you saw a big boat owner flipping the bird on the race course? Here is the Farr 60 Numbers owner showing a little anarchistic form. Smile buster, you're on Sailing Anarchy! Thanks to www.regatta.nu for the shot from Key West.

Question of the Week

What Do You Get?

The question this week has already been asked by anarchist StayinStrewn in the forum, and it seemed a natural one: What do you get from Sailing Anarchy? Have fun.

New

Freshly Milled
Another good lucking, and no doubt fast boat from Mark Mills. This one the Landmark 43, an IRC Cruiser Racer that is just under production by Premier Composite Technologies in Dubai for Landmark Yachts of Norway. With six already sold this performance yacht may show what a dual purpose yacht can offer. The cost? We are hearing $365k for an epoxy built, carbon spars (including a deep section boom), IRC rocket.

Greetings from Valencia

Today is the first day of the US Sailing Rolex Miami Olympic Classes Regatta. This event is the largest gathering of Olympic class sailors in the USA and has over 850 athletes attending this year.

Unfortunately at the last minute I (Andy) was not able to make it to this event. As you may already know I sail on a team that is trying to win the America’s Cup - Luna Rossa Challenge. For the last two years the team has given me the time needed to compete in the Star. Now with only tree months left before the beginning of the Louis Vuitton Cup, I need to be here in Valencia helping my team win the Cup. Luckily Brad and I were able to get Vince Brun to step in again as a guest skipper on our boat for this regatta. Vince is a very talented sailor and has won the Star World Championship along with many other events.

I’m sure Brad and Vince will have a great regatta. The forecast looks good for the whole week. I wish I could have made it, but I am glad Brad is there to compete and absorb all he can from a great sailor like Vince.

Brad will be writing daily reports from the regatta starting this afternoon. I can’t wait to hear about the competition. (Our own Dawg is partipating this week and we'll get reports from him as well - Ed)

The Monstrous asso flown off the long sprit give the new R/P 45 Sjambok plenty of punch, but they are having a tough go in IRC 2 at KWRW. Thanks to Amory Ross for the shot.

We couldn't care less about the TV show 24, the 24 we prefer is right here. This great shot from LZ at Wednesday's racing at Key West. Be sure to read Mr. Clean's daily report further down this page.

A Lesson

A couple of days ago, we told you how the geniuses at SW, for no real reason seemingly other than some particularly lame brand of politics, told the O 30 class "no" to having their own start at the Annapolis NOOD. Below is a good lesson on how you treat a class that should never been dissed in the first place. Good times, SW.

Viewing the Sailing Anarchy site today, I noticed that the folks at Sailing World Annapolis NOOD turned down the Olson 30 Class. We are interested in giving your class a start. Do you think your group would be interested? If so please contact me - it is not too late. We are planning on 12 classes but would add one more for your class would care to participate. We just require 8 boats for a start. I know that you raced with a rating of 108 last year at Screwpile which I believe is the same as the Olson 29. Maybe possible to put 29's and 30's together.

Thank you for your time,

Screwpile Lighthouse Challenge

New

MVOR?
The M would stand for mini, you can probably figure out the rest. Juan Kouyoumdian and Roy Heiner developed the Team Heiner 38 with the goal of sharing the experiences of the Volvo Ocean 70 by creating the opportunity for sailors to experience sailing canting keelboats at an affordable price. The boat is to be built by Schaap Shipcare, Lelystad, Netherlands. In a market crowded with a lot of similar looking and performing boats in this size range, this one at least takes a fairly unique approach.

Deal of the Week

Not so Tender
Need a tender? Then how about one that all the others will run from? A twin diesel, combat tested, bad ass Naval Special Warfare Rigid might be for you! No word whether twin 50 caliber machine guns are an option.

Question of the Week

Give It Up

We think it is safe to say that most of us have quite a Jones for this sport, often to the point of sacrificing other areas of our lives. We all have likely spent way too much time chasing this particular dragon, so the question is what do you give up to make room for sailing? Family? Career? Love? Money? Friends? Nothing? Share a little bit about what you've sacrificed to the Great God of Sailing.

01/16/07

Up Above

Almost all of the latest R/P designs have been amazingly fast. Any reason to believe that their STP 65 won't be either?

01/15/07

A Different World

The world is bigger than keel boating in sunny California as evidenced by this past weekend's DN Western Regional Regatta held on Gull Lake, Minnesota. There's nothing like a huge sheet of clear ice, 67 competitors and incredibly warm temperatures (in the upper 20's). Here's a nice upwind shot, and some downwind hiking.

John Dennis, of Mound MN, 2004 North American champ, walked away with the victory over Aaron Stange of Toledo, Ohio. Full results here. Thanks to Scott Brown.

Natural's Not In It

Apologies to Gang of Four for stealing their song title above, but there is nothing natural about sailing when it is snowing - unless you are from Norway! See Snow Blind below.

New

Good Cook
It is fun to survey the land of new boats. We immediately liked the Cookson 50 (hell, hard not to like any Cookson boat) and thought it would likely be an almost ideal 50' race boat that has a little something down below as well. Here is one with a different flavor to it.
The boat was built for Ron O'Hanley by Cookson, New Zealand. Unlike the first series of Cookson 50's built, Privateer will have a taller rig, deeper keel,
canard and trim tab for IRC optimization. Privateer's debut will be the Bay of Islands Regatta in Opua, New Zealand. The Newport, RI based Corinthian crew looks forward to the Bay of Islands Regatta as it will be a Canting Keel 50 Footer Showdown, with several other canting keel designed boats participating as well. Future racing will primarily take place on the East Coast and Caribbean with a focus on distance races.

Legs

The next edition of the Volvo Ocean race (2008-09) has been announced, with some pretty interesting aspects: 11 ocean legs, 8 in port races, provisos for crew numbers, (both men and women), age, point scoring, and destinations. Read up.

On Board

SA has hired Mark Michaelsen (former owner of The Sailing Pro Shop and currently runs Dry Armour) as a consultant. Mark has a ton of experience, ideas and energy, and we going to have Mark assist us with making this place even better. Among other things, he'll be working on are some web and forum redesign, additional content, and advertising. SA could use a bump, and we look forward to having Mark help us out.

Battle of the Idiot

Boat goes on long distance race, boat breaks rudder, crew gets hurt trying to fix rudder, crew doesn't get medical expenses, skipper sues rudder maker, lawyers posture, shit fight begins. Stay tuned.

West Coast Creepy Crawly

The revolutionary new class of Ocean Going Vessels introduced by Marine Advanced Research, Inc. is about to make it's debut in San Francisco later this month. SA will be there.

Ed Word

Big Deal?

Let's make sure we've got this right: A guy named Ken Barnes takes marginal boat on dubious record attempt, gets caught in big storm, has to be rescued, and scuttles the boat in the process. The mainstream and sailing press make a Big Deal out of it, and we're all supposed to awed by the dramatic rescue of the seagoing adventurer?

Uh, I don't think so.

We of course weren't there, and no doubt it was brutal, but what we have read leads us to believe that this is a guy who seemingly was not prepared for what he ultimately encountered. As bad as his predicament was, he didn't seem to absolutely require being rescued, nor scuttling the boat, particularly if this was his lifelong dream. You don't scuttle everything because all of a sudden you decide that you can't hack it. Not a real ocean sailor. No, he took a beating, was ill equipped to get up off the mat, and instead threw in the towel. And we're supposed to think..what? That he's some sort of hero, or that shows how rough the big bad ocean is, or that he's lucky?

No, it shows us that basically anybody can get their ass in a wringer out there and that you better god damn well have it very together for instances just like this. And if not, then don't bother. So we added it all up, and our reaction is not one of wow, what a story, ours is more like wow, what an embarrassment.

01/09/07

Strum and Dang!
A while back we showed you a bit of the Paul Bieker designed Riptide 50 Strum. We have been a bit late witht the report, but we will feature a full sea trial report from the boat, along with some additional comments from the designer. In the meantime here are a couple of pictures (1, 2) to give you an idea of what a really nice concept for a fast, light and comfortable 50' can look like. That to us looks like how you do it.

Community

Dago Disabled

A good thing will be taking place here is San Diego, a "Happy Hour" Fundraiser for the Challenged America sailors with disabilities program on Saturday, January 27, from 1 PM to 5 PM, at Fiddler's Green Restaurant on Shelter Island, San Diego, California.

"We're excited to co-host this fundraising event, sponsored by the San Diego Parrot Heads Club, to benefit a special San Diego charity that has meant so much to those with disabilities and the boating community over the years," said Steve Rock, owner of Fiddler's Green Restaurant on Shelter Island. "We are looking for the community to come out, pack the house, and show how much they support the rehabilitation work the volunteers at Challenged America do for those with disabilities in San Diego, and around the world. Everyone is invited."

For additional information, to make a contribution or donate a Silent Auction item, contact Steve Rock at Fiddler's Green, (619) 223-2216, or Urban Miyares, cofounder, Challenged America, call (619) 594-8805 or email Port@ChallengedAmerica.org.

The iShares Cup

OC Events and TornadoSport have teamed up to launch a new European circuit for the (Volvo) Extreme 40 catamarans.
The series, named the iShares Cup, will consist of four main events, in France, Germany, the Netherlands and the UK. The class will also be competing in other races across Europe.

There have been a few changes to the competitors: The winning Tommy Hilfiger boat has been sold to Erik Filsø Pedersen for Team Denmark, and another new team is expected to be announced soon.
TornadoSport has already taken orders for new boats. Number six has been sold to Holmatro, whilst boat number seven is reserved for a possible campaign. Full details will be revealed in May.

SA Feature

The Return of the Wet Ass!

Like many of you, we were bummed out when we heard that Tim Zimmerman decided to pull the plug on the Wet Ass Chronicles website. We've been in touch with Tim to have him contribute here at SA, and he has agreed to do so. Starting shortly, Tim will contribute a weekly Wet Ass feature here at SA. It may not be the total Wet Ass, but at least you'll get a splash.

Question Of The Week

OP's

So yesterday your Faithful Ed got pasted sailing IOM's in a very light and fluky regatta, and it inspired today's question: Have you ever jumped into a new boat or class, thinking that you might be pretty competitive, only to get your hat handed to you? If so tell us about the event, boat or class, and why you got spanked!

Sail On, Son

These are hard things to write and I'm hesitant to even do so, but I felt that many of you may wish to pass along your thoughts. Anarchist Steve Washburn's (Wash) precious 10 year-old son Paul passed away from natural causes suddenly and unexpectedly earlier this week. As a father it is impossible to imagine such a tragedy, and yet Steve and his family are sadly being forced to live it.

Wash has been a friend of mine for 20 years, and a regular and insightful contributor here in the SA forums - who can forget his awesome Key West live play by play reporting? More than that, Steve was a dedicated and loving father who brought his sons into the world of sailing in a way that most of us can only dream. Take a look at their blog - you'll get a feel for the love. It is not often that I feel another's pain, but I do here and am quite saddened by their loss. Life can be so swiftly and unfairly cruel.

It is in situations like this that our community, without fail, always shines so bright. Please take a moment to pass along your condolences to the Washburns.

Under Build

Taking Shape

This is the new Jim Antrim designed 40' chined racer for So Cal anarchist Antony Barran. Antony has told us about the boat before (the latest report here), and will be doing another progress report soon. Anarchy Rules

Team Anarchy sailed well to a class victory n the SDYC New Year's Day Race. The boat seemed plenty quick in medium breeze, and we sailed pretty smartly to beat a decent fleet of mostly larger boats. It would seem the Flying Tiger goes pretty well!

Youth Movement
This little dude, a seasoned 14 years old, is attempting to be the youngest ever to sail single handed across the Atlantic ocean. He's getting close and it a pretty compelling story. Of course a couple of questions arise - do you think his parents should let their kid do something like this? Pretty sure we wouldn't let Junior take off across the Atlantic! Whaddaya think?
