7-Up

Team Gotta Love It Seven gets some air during the seventh and final race of the first 18-foot Skiff Interdominions (NZ vs. AUS) in Auckland for over a decade. The Aussies unsurprisingly won the event, with the very polished nippers on Gotta Love It 7 edging out Clubmarine on a tiebreaker. Alex Valings' CT Sail Battens was the top Kiwi boat, taking third place. (Mer's Photographs) - Mr. Clean.

Fait Accomplit

Franck Cammas and his crew have taken their first record. Having left Cadiz on April 24, at 1747 UTC, Groupama 3 crossed the finishing line, at San Salvador, on Tuesday, May 1 at 1846 UTC, having covered the 3901 mile course in 7 days 10 hours 58 minutes 53 seconds.
Subject to ratification, they have taken the Discovery Route record by 2 days 2 hours 31 minutes. Groupama 3's average speed for the course was 21.79 knots, compared to Playstation's 16.92 knots.

VO 70 vs IACC

Earlier in the week our Ask the Designer series had question regarding the relative speeds between a VO 70 and an America's Cup class boat (see Matched Up, below). Here are the comparisons graphed.

Plane Down

A small plane crashed into the Pacific Ocean off Carlsbad, CA on Sunday, with all aboard dead or presumed dead. The story is grim, and the skipper of a boat being delivered home from the Ensenada race saw the whole thing:

"We saw the plane flying fairly low heading West and angling downward at a slight angle. Nothing seemed that unordinary except that the plane was low. We watched it and it started to do sort of a banked turn and as it did, it dipped its wing into the water. The wing disintegrated and the plane cartwheeled right into the water, engine first. This couldn't have been more than a few hundred yards from us. We headed to the spot as fast as possible, to find almost nothing left - just pieces of plane floating about. It wasn't until a couple of other boats and lifeguards got there that we saw two bodies. They were obviously dead and it was not a pretty site. A really violent end, and it really shook us up. We told the authorities what we saw and motored away. One of the things we noticed was a happy birthday balloon that was part of the wreckage. Really sad."

California Dreamin'

The annual Newport to Ensenada race gets billed as the world's largest international yacht race, but outside of a group of hardy racers, it is mostly an excuse to drink for a bunch of people. This year's race was a stupidly light air affair, with a huge number of DNF's out of the 448 starters. Hell, it took the first to finish Andrews 80 Magnitude 21 hours to go the 125 miles! This beauty pictured here was out for the start, and was a fine example of what the land of fruits and nuts offers up! Thanks to anarchist Lewie for the shot.

Double Up

Cammas doubles lead over Fossett

Franck Cammas and crew, on Groupama 3, have had another good nights sailing, at high average speeds. This morning, the maxi-trimaran had doubled its theoretical advantage over Steve Fossett's PlayStation, from yesterday's 200 miles to around 400 miles.
Franck Cammas said this morning "It was a good night, on one tack, although as envisaged the wind weakened slightly. We have 18 knots of breeze and Groupama 3 has been making around 25 knots, but now we have tacked to get further south, where we should find a little more wind."

04/26/07

Quiet Time
Franck Cammas, his crew and the maxi-trimaran Groupama 3 are after Steve Fossett's Discovery Route record, but they aren't doing much shouting about it.
The only information coming out is in French, but there isn't too much of that even and the position map on the website isn't working. All very low key for a € multi-million boat!!

On the telephone, this morning, Franck Cammas said: "It's going well, we again spent a rather fast night on board Groupama 3 and slipped south. We are on the same route as that of Steve Fossett and Playstation, in 2003, but, according to our calculations, we are five hours ahead, which is super. Yesterday, we broke a piece that of carbon that regulates the height of the foil, but other than that it's going well. Groupama 3 is a demanding boat though, I'm a bit tired, so I'll rest whilst Steve Ravussin's watch is on." Stay tuned. BYM News

We've given you just about zero (make that actually zero) coverage of the Melbourne to Osaka double handed race. Most of you know this is a 5,500 nautical mile race that is quite a test. "What the hell," you ask? This M2 cat is airborne as the guys have races on Lac Leman and on the Lac de Neuchatel what do they do? Question of the Week

Bullshit Moves

I've always been a guy who does not like bullshit moves, either on the race course, in the protest room or anywhere else around this sport. I like to sail clean, avoid trouble and almost never start it, unless it is completely necessary.

While racing our Flying Tiger last weekend, we were rounding the only leeward mark in the 9 mile SDYC Opening Day Race. It was a pursuit start and we had passed all the boats except a J/105 that rounded directly in front of us. We stuck our bow up a bit after we rounded to try get a bit of a lane, but like almost any situation like that, there is really no opportunity to do much. But instead of just sailing away, or even in a slight pinch mode, the 105 stuck it up, parking them and us. I looked to leeward and instead of the helmsman steering a tiller boat the way you are supposed to, he was standing up, tiller in the air and just looking at us as he luffed us. So lame. I yelled something like "How about you just sail your boat and not fixate on us", but it had zero effect.

It was stupid, and in my mind, while not particularly egregious, a classic example of a bullshit move. He slowed to a crawl with one goal only - fuck us. We couldn't have gone over him, and had he had the boat in normal upwind mode, would have sailed away and then could have pinched us off later if he wanted. But no, he pulls this move right after the mark, forced us to tack and it pissed me off.

So the question of the week is, can you tell us about a bullshit move that has been pulled on you? Or maybe you've pulled one on someone else? Bring it! Oh yeah, and have fun.

Thanks A Million

By now most know that we have become the sailing site in terms of traffic, and yet still it amazes to see that we just reached 1,000,000 posts in our forums! Sure, a lot of those posts are bullshit, but that is certainly a lot of bullshit! Seriously, you should congratulate yourselves - those million posts are the largest collection of sailing information on the planet, and they cover almost every aspect of racing, cruising, crewing, and owning boats of every possible explanation. If you're not already registered, get on it - registered members are able to procrastinate at work much more efficiently than nonmembers. Nice job, Anarchists!

No Wonder

Yesterday, we wondered who and why anyone would pay 5 grand to go for a day ride on the VO 70 Ericsson. We wonder no more.

Bidders are making a tax-deductible donation and they will benefit the StFYC Foundation and the bidders are making a tax-deductible donation. 100% of proceeds will be used to:

*
Benefit USA Olympic hopefuls. Heaven knows that we need private donations to compete with government sponsored Olympic sailing teams (like the fully funded UK Olympic programs that are developing great sailors)

*
Aspiring junior sailors that need money to compete in regattas, particularly out of town national and international regattas

*
Adaptive sailboats and programs for sailors with physical disabilities. Sailing is one of the few sports where physically challenged people, particularly kids, can compete with able bodies sailors. It may be worth $5k to see the smile on the face of a quadriplegic being winched out of his wheelchair into an access dinghy which he sails with a "sipper/puffer" straw.

*
Sailing outreach programs to teach underprivileged kids to sail that are not growing up in a "Yacht Club Environment"

We may not think it is worth $5k to have perhaps a once in a lifetime experience to go on one of today's most exciting boats, but we can understand supporting needy causes in the sport that we all love.

Get out on the VO 70' Ericsson for a day of "tuning", and it will cost you at least 5 grand, as that is the opening bid on e-Bay for such a thing. Are there people with more money than sense that will pay that to go out for a day? Check it out and see for yourself.

"Hey Man, Got Any Spare Change?"

And you all thought the America's Cup was just a filthy, stinking rich man's game, awash in nothing but money and the sailing "elite"? Think again, friends. This picture shows that even the so-called greats in the sport sometimes have to dig a little deeper to find that extra dough when that fat contract just isn't enough. Perhaps one too many Grateful Dead concerts?

Guaranteed Failure

Sometimes the combination of people and boats is a lethal one. Here's a perfect example: Dude says he will sail around the world not once, not twice, but three times, nonstop with just him and his young girlfriend, who just happens to be a total novice. Oh yeah, its on a 70' Schooner. They have exactly one chance of completing this ridiculous attempt - none. You may follow their blog, but in the meantime, how long do you give them before they throw in the towel?

Palma Has It

If anyone could say "You should have held the Americas Cup here", it is the Palma, Mallorca crowd. Wind and weather conditions were perfect for the Hublot PalmaVela, which was a real spectacular, with a 200 boat entry, ranging from super maxis to classic yawls and traditional llauts.
New Zealand maxi Alfa Romeo took line honours in yesterday's coastal race and stayed ahead on corrected time, but it wasn't enough to beat the Dutch boat Favonius for overall honours.

Winners:

Favonius in Maxi Racer, Aegir in Maxi Cruiser, Mean Machine-Valle Romano in Transpac 52, Giraldilla in Classic yachts, Agneta in Traditional Marconi, Marigan in Traditional spencer, Nova Inmobiliaria in Platú 25, Cinq a Sept in Flying Fifteen, Martilla Ultrajas Lateen rigger Regatta 1, Tinita in Lateen rigged Regatta 2-3, Savanna in Lateen rigged classic Llaüts, A. Zaragoza and A. Aparici in disabled sailing, Viking VI in RN 1, Vell Marí in RN 2, Petrouchka II in RN 3, Silvina in RN 4, Icaro in IMS 1-2, January Sails in IMS 3-4 and International Paint in Empresa (Business) class. Bullimore Off?

The lastest from our friends at BYM News. be sure to check out their wealth of info!

Tony Bullimore's long awaited departure from Hobart, in his quest to beat Ellen MacArthur's round-the-world solo record, looks as though it could happen this weekend.

In anticipation of Tony imminent departure, on what is now called the Blue Ocean Wireless Solo Round the World Challenge, the Team Bullimore Media Centre has moved to Hobart and is set up at the Bellerive Yacht Club, where Tony's Bullimore's 102ft catamaran Doha 2006, better known as the famous Enza, has been based for several months.

Members of Tony's media team have been out with him, on final sea trials, a representative of the World Sailing Record Council is on hand, so now it looks to be all systems go, so long as the weather systems don't play any tricks.

Bizarre

An unmanned yacht found drifting off the north Queensland coast had computers running and even food on a table ready to eat - but no crew, puzzled emergency services say.

Rescuers who boarded the yacht this morning noted that three life jackets and the emergency beacon were still on board, but there was no sign of the yacht's life boat.

A massive search and rescue operation is now underway for three men missing from the 12-metre catamaran called Kaz II, which left Airlie Beach in northern Queensland on Sunday.

It was spotted adrift on Wednesday. Emergency Management Queensland (EMQ) spokesman Jon Hall said crews were puzzled by what they found because "everything appeared normal".

"It looked like the boat had been recently abandoned. The engine was still running in neutral (but) one of the sails had been damaged," Mr Hall said."There was a laptop computer on board and running with power, the computers on board were running, all of their clothing was still there.

"The table was actually set for a meal with food and cutlery in place. Read the story.

44'x Skinny

Question of the Week

Pro/No Pro

The debate over whether or not pro sailors should steer in various OD classes, has been beat to death and already been decided for most classes. However, the new and very un-together Flying Tiger 10M class is now facing this issue (among others), and as an owner, feel it needs to be decided in favor of no pros allowed to steer. Agree or disagree, either way, join in the discussion on the Flying Tiger forum.

04/16/07

Train Kept A Rollin'

Not earth shattering, but cool for Team Anarchy, we won our fourth straight regatta in our new Flying Tiger 10M. This was the April One Design Weekend race out of SDYC, with six boats in the FT class (Etchells, I-14's, Ben 40.7's and J/105's made up the other classes). Just two races were completed, but we won them both.

It is interesting that after a long layoff from the sport, to slowly feel a bit of my game coming back. Getting a touch more aware of the elements that make up a race - starting, the course, tactics, etc. Still not the sharpest tool in the shed, but perhaps not so dull...It doesn't hurt to have good people along either - they can make you look good!

04/16/07

First Dibs

Okay, so we showed you a Kevin Dibley designed cruising boat earlier in the week (see What Is It, below), and just as a reminder, here's what his race boats look like. This is newest design, a 33' Sport boat to be built in China. Sound familiar?

New Feature

On The Water Anarchy

We (we means us and the community) were one of the first on line sites to utilize some interesting virtual real-time race reporting in our forums (Key West Race Week, to be specific) and we now have a dedicated place for that, called On the Water Anarchy. The idea is that those who are at an event and are on the water can check in and post up with some reports or photos or whatever. It should give some of you coverage on an event that you are interested in, in a specific place to find it. We are starting out with Charleston Race Week, which begins Friday. So check it out and let us know how it goes. Oh and if any of you race promoters or event organizers would like to have your event to be featured there, just let us know.

Mr. Clean takes you a little deeper into Chaleston Race Week in Home Cookin' below.

Moldy Oldy

At first glance this might not seem too ugly, but for those of you that watched your furling "performance" genoa turn moldy you know how ugly it can be. For those sailmakers back in the day who started getting the reports from customers that their laminate furler genoas were getting moldy, it was awful. When your Ed worked at Sobstad, we started selling Genesis RF genoas, that seemed to be pretty good. Good until we realized that not only were they getting moldy, but the mold was developing inside the film! Other cruising laminates were having the same problem, but for Genesis, a product that had a number of problems, this was one thing that we didn't need. We have to think the problem eventually got solved...

Thanks to Bob Bird and this genoa from his 10 year old J/32.

Other Media

Anarchy Is The Name

It is no secret that we don't get much love from anybody else in the "conventional" media, so it was a nice surprise to have Bill Center, the boating columnist for the Union Tribune newspaper here in Dago give us some. Center and I go way back, almost all of it adversarial, as I always felt that he did a lousy job covering the sailing scene here. I now know what he has been up against - an editorial staff and public at large here in SD that couldn't care less about sailing. Center gets marks for continuing to fight to get column inches for sailing in the paper, and for finally covering a good subject - me! Good times.

SA the Matchmaker?

We know with SA we've created a vehicle that has enabled a lot of you to meet other people and sail with people in places that you might not have otherwise. But who knew that we'd be a matchmaker. I suppose it was inevitable, but here's a pretty cool story. Hell it almost makes us seem...good.

Funny story really...I put a post up asking for someone to take my friend out to learn to sail on Port Phillip Bay here in Melbourne, and got a reply asking what boat I sail on etc., etc. We got chatting by PM's and then on MSN (at work!) and then decided to meet up. In a park. At night. Can you imagine if I told my mother that! He could have been a serial killer!

Thankfully he's not, he's an angel! And we moved in together after six months and got engaged about 2.5 hours ago!

That's about it really!

Thanks again Scot!

We liked this submission to our Ugly Sail contest so much we thought we'd put it on top today. Look how badly shredded the main is under the boom. From our anarchist reader:

Dirty Pirate

Oh yeah, these dirty pirate sails are ugly! "I saw this "pirate" tourist ship off the coast of Puerto Vallarta last week and immediately thought of your ugly sails request. The shamelessly luffing canvas almost drowned out the sound of the diesels."

Speed Freak

The hydrofoil Hydroptere set two world speed records off Lorient, France yesterday, one going 41.5 knots in one nautical mile, and one going 44.5 knots in 500 meters (we think). Both are subject to official homologation by ISAF/World Sailing Speed Council Record but it is pretty damn impressive no matter how you slice it! Thanks to Arnaud Pilpre / Sea & Co for the outstanding photographic work. Comments?

Looking....

...for a J/133? Perhaps a Mumm 30? A Cheetah 30? Have you seen a Corby 41.5? Then we'd suggest you take a look at our classified section, brought to you by Farr Yacht Sales. It has a great assortment of boats, gear and jobs for you to check out. Hell, we have one anarchist who not only found and bought a Shock 35 from our classifieds, he also found his entire crew on our Crew Pool Anarchy forum. Check this out:

On 3/21 my Dad mentioned over a drink at the YC that he really didn't want to miss the 60th Ensenada anniversary, (31 Ensenada's for him and then he sold his boat, he's 75 years old and the fourth quarter's winding down!). We spotted
Whiplash in the SA classifieds on 3/21 (the day the ad ran). Boat showing/offer on 3/23. Closed/paid on 3/26. Entered race 3/26. Placed crew wanted ad in SA 3/26. Crew completely filled from SA ad on 3/31. That's less than ten days from cocktail napkin to reality. Now that's a story!

Fear of a Black Planet

Probably don't have to worry about that with the RC 44's. Nifty looking and no doubt quick, they are very spendy (try well over $500,000) and look rather uncomortable to sail on. Nontheless, seven of these gangstas showed up for the first of their 2007 circuit which will consist of eight events held in Slovenia, Croatia, Switzerland, Italy, Portugal and the United Arab Emirates. Yo, money!

04/04/07

Fear of a Flat Planet

Look at the flat heads on these AC dinosaurs! Pushing these sorts of things is great, but do you get the feeling that all this is just putting lipstick on a pig? Thanks for the nice shot to our friend Gilles Martin-Raget.

Butt Ugly

Can you believe that one of our adoring fans would dare nominate this as a contestant for our Butt Ugly Sail contest? We're shocked and of course think it is a winner! Thanks to Bee Bednar for the shot, we think.

SA Feature

Gear Anarchy

Over the years we've had a number of requests to create a separate forum for a place for people to post comments about gear, boats and the like. So we did. We are very fortunate to have Mauri Pro Sailing sign on as our title sponsor, and we also have made additional banner ads available for advertisers at a very economical rate. As always, we love the free exchange of thoughts, comments, and critiques, but we don't want any bullshit bashing. So come on in to Gear Anarchy and make it happen!
