We've been chided a number of times for not knowing what a real sportboat is, and we've managed to not lash out with vicious, angry or defensive replies to those of you who have done so. Well, most of the time that is. But it's hard to argue with what you see here as being anything less than a real sportboat. Some of you no doubt have seen this boat, and perhaps seen it blast right past you, but I reckon many of you have not. Since we're not designers (nor do we sit around at a computer pretending to be), we thought it intersting to hear from the guy responsible for this little rocket. His name is Brett Bakewell-White and though he has made a definitite mark in New Zealand, many of us here in the States are unfamiliar with his work. That is about to change because SA is doing an InnerView with Brett that will appear in the coming weeks. Even more interesting (wait, what can be more interesting than an SA InnerView?) is the fact that Brett is drawing a TP 52 for a California customer! We can't wait to see this one, and Brett has promised to get us drawings as soon as he's able. In the meantime here are Brett's words on this little green rocket. We reckon the sportboats that you have been featuring are only just playing at it! Here are some shots of a sportboat that we did a couple of seasons ago here in New Zealand. The boat is called "BOHICA" (stands for 'bend over here it comes again') and was designed as a dual purpose boat. The hull is narrow to meet the NZ trailer yacht rules - also require the cabin etc. - Then we turbo'ed her with the bolt on racks for fun harbour sailing.
Been clocked at 20kts two sail reaching, very wet, loads of fun - and banned by the local yacht clubs and keelboat fleet, whilst the trailer yacht fraternity threated to boycott the trailer yacht champs if it turned up! Seemed like a good idea at the time, but now she sits in a backyard gathering birdstuff cause nobody wants to play! Brett
