MUMM 30 Worlds

Safest Mumm Regatta Ever

This is the first of hopefully a few Mumm 30 Worlds reports. This 30 is sponsored by SA(!) and will flying the colors, beyotch!

So what the F, Mumm 30 Worlds at RCYC in Toronto, and I got to plan for the hurricane. Wait I am in Rochester New York thousands of miles from any tropical storm, so with list in hand, West Marine here I come.

A “newbie”, not in Sailing Anarchy world but in the Mumm world. Flying downwind at 14-15 kts in a 30 foot boat is pretty cool, spending $500 dollars at West marine is not. So as I sit here about a week away from one of the biggest regattas ever, I have to worry about what flare I am going to use when I am in a state of emergency during a course race. Three lifejackets, fog horn, sailing rules, bucket, and a first aid kit, that’s what I am use to in the 22 fleet and now a list of 40. Talking to the rest of the fleet this seems to be the common theme of the upcoming event and “Why the hell do we need charts on the boat?” said one competitor. Some of the best in the world will be at this event, and the event is at one of the best venues in Canada. Throughout the great lake fleet, most of the boats have very similar speed and anyone can win at anytime. Everyone is very excited and can’t wait to get through measurement and just start sailing. It looks as if all teams are going to be tuff, and there is not one real favored competitor. What it comes down to is that everyone loves the boat. The class is so much fun, great people, great sailing, and great Champagne. Yeah, we all might bitch about the safety check list but give us a break were sailors, we were created to sail, drink, complain and make excuses. Are goal is to have fun go fast, and meet some cool people.
