Chicks Dig It
Each year over the Queen’s Birthday Weekend, the Royal Melbourne Yacht Squadron conducts the Women's Keelboat Regatta. The regatta is well supported by the other yacht clubs around Port Phillip Bay and attracted over 200 competitors last year.

Mel, owner of Animus (Adams 10 Metre MH12), is well known for putting together Women’s teams to represent Middle Harbour Yacht Club in Ladies Day events around the Sydney Harbour. Continuing these efforts, Mel has put together a team to compete at the Women’s Keelboat Regatta, after an opportunity arose at the Annual Waitangi Cup. The girls had joined the Adams 10 fleet at MHYC, after competing (4-up) in the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia Winter Ladies Day Race, when they were approached by Ken Simpson about flying to Melbourne to compete. Having not had much opportunity to compete in this sort of regatta, the girls jumped at the chance and are now finalising arrangements.

The team have been especially put together for this event, from those who either regularly crew on Animus, or have competed in Ladies Day events around Sydney Harbour on both Zen, Estate Master and Animus, consisting of several anarchists. The Women’s Keelboat Regatta consists of 6 races over 3 days, and is run on a volunteer and fundraising basis. It is a unique sporting event, as it is only one of a few all-female Keelboat Regatta’s in Victoria.

The crew will have Internet access at the regatta to update the Anarchists who have been wishing them luck via the threads and PM’s.

Chicks, II

Victoria's Women's Keelboat Regatta showed us all the sides of Melbourne. From not being able to see more than 1000m with no breeze on Day 1 (coldest Melbourne day in 13 years) to Days 2 racing being postponed with 40 knot gusts and a big seaway running. By day 3 we had adjusted to the layout of Rollercoaster and managed to start the day with a Hooter. We started the race with gusts hitting 30 knots so decided to set the hounds kite to begin with. After finding this a little slow we decided to go for the kite we call the Johnny O, this is our masthead without shoulders. Still too easy so we decided to show the fleet our favourite masthead kite (The Pornstar). Quote of the day was 'When I signed up for this I didn't realise it was an offshore event', competing in 25knots with a number 1 up on an Adams 10m with the Port Phillip Seaway was an experience. With the Number 1 scooping up large amounts of water to cover the front half of Rollercoaster. We had a fantastic series racing against the other Adams 10m Salamander III in some very close fought races. We managed to finish up the series with a 2nd, 2nd and 4th in three Divisions The final results were very close with only 2 points separating 2nd to 4th. Congratulations to Hyperactive on their Overall Victory. It was also fantastic for Phil, Mel, Miss Demeanour and Xayzitz to catch up with fellow anarchists Sportscar, PHB, That Bar Guy and Costanza. Special thanks to Sportscar for loaning us the Anarchy flag for the backstay during the regatta.

Cheers
Mel, Phil and Xay
