The
Round Gotland Midwinter Challenge have
got a new 30 foot multihull record. The time 27H
58M 42SEC beats the old one by eight hours. When
the crew, skipper Isabelle Mungsgaard, Calle Hennix,
Anders Lewander and Rickard Oberpichler, on the
SeaCart 30, named 3, started at 11 pm Saturday
the weather forecast looked good with westerly
winds, but in reality it was from south west and
up to 5 meter high waves from two weeks of southerly
winds so we had to go upwind all the way to Visby
(first 100NM). On Sunday morning the wind finally
shifted to the west and good times for the crew.
Great, sunny, but cold, sailing from Visby to Cape
Hoburgen at an average speed in the high 16 settled
the record mode high again after a slow start.
At
2 pm on Saturday we rounded Cape Hoburgen, Gotland´s
most southern point, and the wind suddenly went from
1216 knots to 46 knots. In a gybe one
of the crew members, Calle Hennix, hit his head and
had to be patched up a bit, at the same time we had
to make a few strategic decisions, bussloads of shallow
patches but distance to save in this area, so we
had our hands full. The wind increased during the
afternoon and on Sunday evening the waves got higher
again. The last 50 NM from Gotska Sandon to Sandhamn
was like sitting in a roller coaster, cold water
from everywhere and the speed hitting the 20 knot
range most of the time.
At
3 am "3" came back to Sandhamn with a cold,
tired but very happy crew!
