A Hairy End to Sydney Amateurs Super
30 Season......
The last race of the Sydney Amateurs Sailing Club’s (SASC) 05/06 season was held in very wild conditions on Sydney Harbour when the only other boats out racing were the starters in the CYCA’s Sydney Gold Coast race. Some of those offshore racing yachts didn’t even make it to the heads.
Chris Sligar in “Tasty” had some spectacular runs under asymmetric and won the race easily sealing his position as the scratch winner for the series. He loaded his boat up with 9 crew to help handle the extreme conditions and to allow him to keep up the maximum sail area. Last season the Super 30 racing by the Amateurs was a great success with 18 boats racing weekly with those numbers increasing to around 24 boats every second/third week when the short series boats joined the fleet. The club is confident to build on that success in 2006/2007.
There has been some interest, expressed, in current Sailing Anarchy forums, by owners of smaller sports boats, for the SASC to include a sub class for those boats .SASC’s advice is that that they would welcome having more of these smaller high performance sports boats race and could set up a sub-class if enough boats are entered. The owners need to get hold of their mates and let the club know who will be racing so that they can get enough numbers to set up a class ahead of the season start.
The one limitation however is that any entries must be self righting as the club at present does not have the manpower and boats to provide for rescue services required for off the beach non-self righting sports boats at this time…this may be supportable some time in the future if the sports boat owners work it with the club. The SASC would welcome the opportunity to be the focal point for all the high performance sports boats and sports yacht racing on Sydney Harbour. Expanding the racing fleet and including mini regattas is part of that plan. The SASC has announced the format and details for the club’s “Super 30” 2006/2007 racing season. The Super 30 division ….is open to mono hull self righting yachts to 32’ (9.75m) that conform generally to the Super 30 criteria i.e. light displacement high performance. Sailing Anarchy’s “Crewing” forum is also going to be used by the club to help owners find crew. Details of the Sydney Amatuer Sailing Club 2006/2007 Season:
Pointscore starts on Saturday 16th September 06, and will consist of 20 races in the long series (racing every Saturday) and 12 races in the short series (every second Saturday), a mini regatta consisting of 3 to 4 short windward leeward races has also been programmed for Sunday 29th October 06, (similar format to the Audi Sydney Regatta). Also any boat entered in the SASC fleet is automatically entered in the Audi Sydney Regatta held on Sat/Sun 3/4 March 07 and are. We are also confident the Super 30’s will have there own division in this regatta as was the case last year. The SASC season opens with the Opening Regatta on Saturday 2nd September 06, entry is free of charge yachts entered in any SASC race series. We encourage and would welcome all to join us on this day. By now most Super 30 Skippers/Owners who sailed with the SASC last year would have received the 2006/2007 SASC Race Programme and Entry Form.
