Build
40 the Hard
Way?
We
love to present to you projects that you otherwise might not know
of. Here is one such, in their own words. Enjoy.
LC40' is built by Pascal Doin (7th in Mini Transat 2003) in Quiberon
in France for 2006 Route du Rhum. Pascal Doin is a sailmaker ("All-purpose"
in La Trinité), skipper, and now boatbuilder!
Construction:
Red cedar strip planking + epoxy/glass for the hull; PVC foam +
epoxy/glass for the deck and internal structure.
Weight
saved compared to production boat, Increase of heeling arm (more
lead ballast) Straight waterlines for better acceleration. Design
inspired by our 1999 Mini-transat design (231, 232, 277) which slogan
was "power max": Hull designed at 3,50m and then "brimmed"
to fit the Mini rule box (3,00m) so there was a chined transom (yes
in 1999, a good idea now used by Lombard, Kouyoumjian, etc..).
With his sharp entries, this design has got character! Take a look
at this
page, and you can see the famous and astonishing 3d keel on
231.
Here for the LC 40, there is no chine because it's hard to build
a perfect chine, but the idea is the same, with some roudness in
the sections to make her polyvalent.
Ergonomic
cockpit for solo racing, protection with coachroof cap. Modular
inside accommodations: racing or cruising version Cruising version:
hydraulic lifting keel. Racing version: fixed keel with central
charts table
Costs
of materials:
Platform: 50000 €
Equipment: 130000 € (including carbon rig, sails, deck fitting,
safety equipment and electronics)
Total for Pascal: 180000 € TTC (150000 € HT + 19,6% french
VAT) ex manpower, of course.
Time expected for building: 4000 Hours (nonprofessional builders).
Sorry, no website for the moment.
Best regards
