6mR World Cup
Sandhamn/Sweden

In late July, more than 50 6mR’s competed for the World Cup in Sandhamn outside Stockholm, the capitol of Sweden. Both new design class and old school wooden boats, built earlier than 1965 were present

The German boat ”Courage” with Dietrich Grenau at helm won the new design class, and the Danish ”Sunray” with skipper Hans J Oen, the old ones.A perfect breeze for any other boat (7-8 m/s = 15 knots) among 2-3 meter waves turned the racecourse into a splashing inferno for the 6m class during one day - some of the crew members thought they had stepped on board a submarine!

”How can one design a boat that doesn´t take 12-15 knots of wind without three pumps running full time….” was one comment on the jetty..Also, former Whitbread/VOR skipper Gurra Krantz, on ”Berta” as a tactician, wondered how the h…. Are you supposed to see where the wind blows..

The pics shows the third days race and as you see, 4-5 m/s (approx 10 knots) and clear sky. Also to remember was the Commodores Party, in Claes Ahlins garden (he´s the Chairman of the Swedish 6 metre association). 400 people, 14 lambs on the grill, live band, big screen pictures from daily races and wine and beer enough to fill a tanker. Good times.
