| In our humble opinion, one of the cool things about this site is that we give the opportunity for a lot of you to tell us and read about what is going on all over the world. Good Morning! I am writing you from a small island in the Atlantic Ocean Called Lanzarote, (Canary Islands, Spain) and would like to comment that we are about to bring to the island a fleet of J80´s (26 units), We are all Snipe sailors who are getting a bit too lazy to sail those dinghies, and especially here where the winds (trade winds) are always over 12 knots. We are probably the most powerful Snipe fleet in Europe and now we are the current 2nd in the last European championship, 1 European Jr., 1st,3rd, 6th in the nationals this year, and Europeans champions in 2000. In Canary Islands we enjoy a very warm winter (around 20º C) and we consider with this new fleet inviting people to sail here in winter time and organize some serious winter series of match racing and fleet racing. The fleet will be located in Marina Rubicon a new Marina in the south of the island. I would like you to mention it on your web which I see everyday, it will be very important for this group of people and for this little island in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. I will send you pictures as soon the boats arrive. Thank you very much for your time. Good winds, 12/20/04 |

Hobart Is Tough Here's some local knowledge for you with more photos of the damage that took place at the RQYS Marina in Brisbane, Australia.
Late on Sunday , thinking it was about time for a decent thunderstorm given recent rain and high temperatures the owner got out the heavy lines and tied the boat down on the hardstand. About 1400hrs on Monday, a severe thunderstorm struck Manly.
While Trumpcard remained upright on the hardstand (thanks to the tie downs) the mast was broken at the second spreaders by the impact of the other boat. The rescue operation took until 2100hrs with two heavy duty cranes needed to lift the other vessel clear. And here is the clincher This is the same Trumpcard that got taken out on the start line of the 2002 Hobart race by a collision with a larger boat that was later disqualified. No one said getting the Hobart was easy. - Rhonda McPherson 12/15/04 |

The Folks of Norddeutsche Vermögen Group of Companies liked the Idea and sponsored the Project. The perfect yacht for line honours was found in Oxnard, Ca. Quantum an Adrews 56 was bought from previous owner Udo Gietl and shipped it to Germany. The boat is club owned by the HVS (www.hvs-hamburg.de) and will be sailed mainly by non professionals. The Boat was named Norddeutsche Vermögen Hamburg (NV for the sponsor, Hamburg to follow the tradition since HVS foundation in 1903 all Flagships are named Hamburg). I´ve attached you a nice shot of the boat on the river Elbe in front of Blankenese, one of Hamburgs most beautifull suburbs (Picture Copyright HVS). I just wanted to show SA that in Germany not everything is IMS über alles some sing the old Dead Kennedys Song California über alles even though we´ll be forced to race under IMS Kind Regards Christian Drake _/) _/) 11/05/04 |

Kiwi Match Loaded Hog Cup 2004While most of you were drifting up the coast in this year's coastal classic, three teams from Auckland were on their way down to Wellington to race in the Loaded Hog Cup. The Loaded Hog Cup is a new grade four match-racing regatta held out of Royal Port Nicholson yacht club. Eight teams are invited to compete in the event, which is sailed in MRX's over three days. This was the first year for the event and it received a lot of interest with teams coming from as far as Auckland and Christchurch. The eight teams were made up of four local teams representing RPNYC, three Auckland teams representing RNZYS, and one Christchurch team. Entry list: Read On 31-Oct-2004 |
| Cheers Gary Jobson has made it known that he doesn't like this site, and we could not care less what he thinks of us. We do know that he has battled health problems and this past weekend the Annapolis Yacht Club hoisted an Etchells and Star Regatta. We are told that the highlight of the entire event was that Jobson, sailing an Etchells won in a 14 boat fleet. When he received his trophy, he also received a standing ovation from all that were in the room. Good deal. 10/26/04 |

Hellfish Yachting Tour of Queensland: August 2004 This is an overview of the Hellfish yachting trip to Australia, comprising of primarily the two top class yachting regattas at Airlie Beach and Hamilton Island. We would sincerely like to thank the following people for making this trip possible: Wendy Ballard, Mount Gay Rum, Maxxium New Zealand, Danny Doolans, and Sail NZ and www.SailingAnarchy.net. Without you this trip would have been impossible, or at least much more expensive and nowhere near as much fun. We thank you very much! The trip started in a bit of an unorganised panic, as Josh and I received an offer to deliver Zana a 100ft maxi yacht up the coast of Australia from Southport to Mackay. The boys were given such short notice that Matt unfortunately missed out on this part of the tour due to University commitments. Read On 06-Oct-2004 |
| Angry Big Man Big piss-up coming at Monday's Dago PHRF meeting because the SC 70 Mongoose got an "administrative correction" of -12 seconds a mile just before the SD to Ensenada race. The only problem was that no one told the owner, or Charterer [........... DC!] until the day of the race. DC ended up deep in the fleet for the race, and whether the correction was justified or not, the real issue is that it should not have been done without notifying someone. The fact that it was DC is just like trying to put out a fire with Gasoline! He is allegedly loaded for for Bear! Oh, Good Times!! 10/07/04 |
| Downtown Wins Fall Series A little J/24 info for ya......... 23 SEP 04 - The final race of the Fall Thursday night series started with great promise. 10 knots out of the north and a clear, warm evening. Gerry Davis set a slightly boat favored line, which made for a very exciting start. Twenty seconds to the gun, Downtown is at the boat. Uh-oh. Better reach off a little. Next up, Last Kid Picked. Good start at the boat with Fawn Liebowitz just to leeward. LKP (using their 'good' sails) were able to match Fawn's speed as the boats sailed to the left side of the course. Downtown tacked to port and ducked Fawn and LKP. LKP tacked, but couldn't cross Downtown when the boats came together a couple of minutes later. LKP tacked back to cover Fawn Liebowitz. Downtown rounded the weather mark in first followed closely by LKP and Fawn. LKP, USA3225 and Fawn gybed immediately as Downtown headed towards Coates Island in the slowly dying breeze along with the rest of the fleet. USA3225 and LKP got tangled up trying to keep their air clear and waved goodbye to Fawn. USA3225 gybed away towards the center of the course. Fawn Liebowitz followed suit shortly after, escaping before the wind shut down completely on that side of the course. LKP sailed into a black hole from which there was no escape. The boats that initially sailed towards Coates enjoyed the tail end of the dying breeze and were able to make up huge ground. Fawn Liebowitz rounded the leeward mark in first followed by Downtown. After that it was kind of hard to see the order because it got dark. Fawn Liebowitz won the race followed by Downtown in second. Somewhere in the darkness Blindspot got by USA3225 to finish third. Downtown's second place finish meant they won the shootout for the Overall Fall Series. Click here for full results: In
other news... - Local Fleet 23 members will be racing in the J24 World Championships next week. Chris Morgan, Mike Finch and Alan Ouellette are travelling to Noroton, Connecticut o crew for Will Welles on USA3145. Keep track of the action at www.j24worlds.com. I will try to send a regatta update next week. 09/28/04 |
It Happens
We in Singapore love your rag. You tell it like it is and being a mix of fools that we are dont give a rats ass about what Yachting World or Sailing World or any f*cking world says about sailing. Why? Because we know SE Asia is on the fringe of the sailing world (remember Jello Biafras record label). So heres some ugly local knowledge from SE Asia (with great visuals). Last Sunday saw the conclusion of the 7th annual Western Series Regatta with a rich history of dismastings, grounding, collisions, and general weekend-warriorship. Day three, race 4, saw us flying along in a fresh 20 knot breeze and approaching our 2nd of three bottom mark roundings in ww/lwd course with a good chance to take this race if the final sausage was event-free.
As we rounded the bottom mark our newest of crew who had done probably 200 mark roundings with us by now decided it was a good time to dump the spin halyard and let it run free. 3 seconds later we had a major hand-brake problem. Sheets and guys flew out of blocks like Jack the Bear and shortly thereafter we had a 100 sq m masthead pennant (refer to pix). Good news? We dropped this race and took 2nd overall on IRC. Woohoo! Back on shore, when the newbie on halyard was asked what went through his mind when half the boat was screaming at him he replied: Big tittie woman. Go figure.

Take Seven Races, 400 Pints of Black and a Large Disco Please From the 16 aboard Disco Inferno 2 (First 47.7) What a party Cork is! I've only just recovered enough to recall the memories of the week (lots still seem to be missing) and write a brief report for this fine website. The power of rehydration salts cannot be recommended highly enough as an aid to hangover recovery. The
social after racing is just first class 'till 2am every night.
Bed by 3am. The Disco rent-a-party carried on hard every night
bringing each tent alive with bright red Hawaiian shirts and winning
two magnums of champagne for 'best dressed crew'. What great taste
those judges have. The party highlights included kicking the beamish
Irish bar into action as the 'Gay Australian Sailing Team' on
Tuesday night and stripping the willow with the other crews to
the tunes played by Natural Gas. Our Mast and Foredeck ran a very
successful week long battle to see who could dance with the most
ladies, much to he bemusement of some local lasses, and our Main
Sheet introduced Cork to the subtle art of tree jumping, performed
at 2.30am, which comprises a 20 yard run up and jump into the
potted ferns. He also takes the accolade for the 'Jack Mihov'
tannoy announcement, which seemed to be appreciated by the 5000+
crowed on the last afternoon. I don't remember laughing so much
in years. Read

Downsize! A small one design fleet in Chicago: We are actively trying to grow our radio control one design fleet for Tuesday night racing. Most of our skippers are big boat sailors looking for more practice and challenge, so the racing can be pretty competitive. It must be the most affordable fleet in Chicago to join... Winter is the boat building season, so right now is a great time to try out the racing before the darkness sets in and it's time to build your own. Here's some more info.

| Local Knowledge Flip Flop Boston -- A fleet of 51 boats from throughout the North Shore, Mass. Bay and Newport took part in the second annual Flip Flop regatta on Saturday off Boston harbor in a yacht race that honors the legacy of Alexandra Nicole Zapp. Zapp, a 30-year-old Boston sailor, was murdered on July 18, 2002 after stopping at a Burger King rest stop on her way to Newport, R.I. Zapp's violent death occurred when she entered the ladies room after midnight and the sole employee at Burger King attacked and killed her. The attacker had a long history of incarceration and was a repeat sexual offender. Zapp's mother, Andrea Casanova of Portland, Ore., formed the Ally Foundation shortly after her daughter's murder and has worked closely with Lt. Gov. Kerry Healey of Massachusetts on changing existing laws. On April 7, 2004 the foundation was instrumental in the passage of the Sexually Dangerous Commitment Law which closed a loophole in the system that had allowed dangerous repeat sex offenders to slip through the system and get back on the streets. The Supreme Court of Massachusetts also recently made the decision to make public the identities of Level Three sexual offenders on the Internet. Read on. 08/18/04 |

| Ooops I know
that you have been chasing local content so here's a good one
from Queensland Australia, where the Hogs Breath, Hamilton Island,
and Hayman Island regattas are about to begin. Seems it is a case
of the local yachting authority being asleep on watch. In short
someone forgot to make sure an exemption got put in the law to
allow yacht racing under the local Marine Safety legislation.
So if you have a crash while racing, the Marine Safety Authority
will prosecute you under the Collision Regulations regardless
of whether you are right under the RRS and there are plenty of
differences between the two. 07/16/04 |
| Lakers We just wanted to make you aware of some local sailing here in the Great Lakes. The 80th running of the Port Huron to Mackinac Island race starts this Saturday. The long course (around the South Hampton light) is a 253 mile sprint to the land of fudge and road apples. The shore course is a 204 mile cruise for the smaller boats along the Michigan shoreline. There are 269 entries for this years race including 9 entries in the GL70 class (mostly Santa Cruz 70s), 4 entries in the Turbo class, 13 entries in the J105 class and 15 entries in the J35/T35 level 72 class. There should be a lot of exciting class racing going on in addition to the battle for line honors. Follow the action here:

| MORC Lives! Well, sort of. The heyday of MORC created boats that while a bit dopey by today's standards, made for a class that had some of the best handicap racing ever. Here in So Cal there was a pretty robust MORC scene, and we loved racing MORC in everything from J/24's to Santana 30/30 GP to custom Peterson 30' maxi MORC boats. MORC is not what it once was, but we are told that MORC will have its International Regatta & 50th Anniversary Celebration in Annapolis, MD July 29-Aug 1, 2004. | Soft Here in Dago, one of the homeboys reports that during a weak (they're almost all weak here these days) PHRF series called the Fiore a week ago, the SD PHRFer's showed their true colors. What up with all the SD PHRFer's afraid to put kites up on Sunday? Some of them didn't even have their #3's out yet and they wouldn't put a kite up??? It was blowing a blistering 18 to maybe 20. Weak Class 1 was nonexistent (all in Long Beach?), only 1 boat flew a kite in class 5, none in 4... the only class that seemed to even try was Class 3 with the Beneslows (Beneteau 40.7's), if you can believe that. I would think other boats would've been pumped to go throw a kite up & w/ not very many boats out the lanes were big. I think some of the issue is North Sails Race Week took some of the bigger boats up there... but not that many. Thanks for leaving my name out.... more than enough people can't stand me as well! 7/06/04

This is where you send in stories, results, rumors, inside info, JPEGS, - basically whatever is going on in your area. We thought it would be fun for people to read what everyone else is up to. You may remain anonymous, and there may be a new SA T-shirt in it for. Send your stuff to us here. Thanks. 06/24/2004 |
